Both have so-called "static storage duration", which is what influences the initial value. See C99 standard, section 6.2.4 paragraph 4: "An object whose identifier is declared with external or internal linkage, or with the storage-class spe

See my post: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=5762363 main will have a value of zero, and 0x600864 will presumably be &main (it's not the initial arbitrary value of main). Auto variables are left uninitialized so that they don't h

The explanation is not quite correct - execution starts at &main rather than the address given by the value of main. On VC++, at least - well, on my PC anyway - the process halts because the data segment doesn't have the execute bit set

I was merely wondering whether this word is OK to use. Do people think it rude and immature-sounding, or is it a simple term that passes without comment? That's all!

Always sounds rude to me, which was my main complaint. At least it's not used in the vocative. But it's also a somewhat childish term, being a contraction (phonetically spelled - and with a foreign accent!) of a term that's already seemingl

It's been a while but those look like ANSI escapes so I think if you add something like DEVICEHIGH=C:\DOS\ANSI.SYS to your CONFIG.SYS then you should find it starts to interpret them correctly. I think ANSI.SYS uses up less than 30K.

I believe the goroutines are cooperative, yielded either explicitly or by calling various library functions. So you don't need quite the same sort of locking as you do with preemptively-multitasked threads, and there's also a much larger se

And the global object nonsense alone is enough to make it suck. Throw in the lack of an integer type, the curious `for each' statement, and the oddities surrounding `this', and it really starts to feel like this is the sort of language that

Slide #33 is actually reasonable advice. Variable shift = 11 cycle latency on PS3/Xbox360, and it blocks both threads and disables interrupts as it runs. (Will the compiler figure this out? Maybe, maybe not. But if you write the code you wa

I suspect you can infer a subscription when a thread goes to sleep. It's probably waiting on some kind of synchronization primitive (and I guess I/O would count), or has explicitly slept for a period. You still need a timer, I think, but it
