I used to use VC++ to build C code sometimes. People write software in C, and if you use VC++ you might want to compile it. C and C++ are not the same, and the fixing-up process can be time-consuming and error-prone, even assuming the code

I don't agree about leaving files outside version control - this always ends in tears. Regarding versioning, you can always version any file by storing every revision and compressing them as best you can. I believe this is what Perforc

1 year ago: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=9330482 What changed? Is BitKeeper still an ongoing business with some other model, or is that, as they say... it? I hope not.

If it's 33% of your meals then 33% of your kcal isn't an unreasonable place to start ;) I'd be surprised to hear that this is common, though. I was actually going to suggest that for this supposed most important meal of the d

For your ordinary average everyday normal well-supported language, stick with the IDE. But suppose you're working with some random language that nobody's ever heard of. It's some tool-, product- or site-specific thing. If you

For whatever it's worth, I found this explanation useful, at least when rendered visually, when first encountering this stuff. But clearly the geometric viewpoint isn't important to everybody, because the author of the post would

The smell? My main memories of visiting Venice (20 years ago...) were also: general lack of greenery, not many open spaces, and a pervasive delapidated shabbiness. Also, it's built on marshland. So I'm not sure the good city plann

Quite. One of my flatmates in the mid 1990s was the brother of a member of Combat 18, a UK-based neo-Nazi group, which fuelled my subsequent suspicion of anybody with 18 in their pseudonym. But there are of course many possible reasons for

Cost of display scanout in terms of power? When nothing's moving, more pixels = higher bandwidth requirements, and the thing has to be clocked higher. (I guess it runs constantly. The new non-scanned LCDs will help I suppose.) You also

The ARM approach is clever, but you only load 8 bits. Suppose you need a 32-bit constant - it's going to take 4 instructions. Compared to the halfword instructions, you do win with certain awkward constants such as 3<<15. That&#x

If you want to actually clone the stack, you're probably stuck. If you want to use this to do something that takes multiple invocations of lua_resume to complete without the calling Lua code being aware, you might be able to use lua_yi

The discussion is older, so I stand by the wording. The post is dated earlier as well... a mystery. Perhaps this is some artefact of the ever-fickle HN voting process.

I used to have this problem a bit, but over the years I seem to have worked it out somehow. When driving I do seem to have internalized that left = off road and right = across traffic. I never really noticed this until I drove abroad... I q

You're probably not going to be tweaking the implementation section. I prefer the 2-file approach myself, but the basic idea of distributing source files that the user adds into their own project is a good one. I much prefer it to havi
