This is amazing. I'm CTO and co-founder of a (much smaller) monitoring company. We have as one of our core values that we donate 1% of MRR to non-corporate backed Open Source. We are also Sentry users BTW.

We just migrated to Clickhouse. We collect monitoring data. So response times from 20+ different location. We are not super duper big but at least 100M+ individual metrics per month. We want to give our users a snappy, interactive dashboard

Simple. Don’t use K8S. It’s absolutely 100% the wrong way to go for solo devs with no product market fit. Use Heroku (or any other PaaS) and throw in some serverless stuff here and there. Again DO NOT geek out on the tech. Geek out on getti

Sure. I got "lucky" but I mostly activated my tiny network. I just mentioned to everyone I was looking. I did get invites from some big players in the market quite early on for possible acquisitions (more acquihire...). One of tho

Blogging helped a lot. Really detailed, high value blogs. I was on the front page of HN many times because of the blogs.

Thanks, it's a pretty long story and still very actively developing I guess. Let's try and boil it down: - Started working on the product to scratch an itch. Essentially couldn't find an easy, dev friendly synthetics solution

I worked on it close to two years by myself. But I mixed in a minimal amount of freelancing to pay the bills. Took quite a while to get the first 10 customers: we're in a busy market. I brought on a CEO and CCO first, essentially two e

Random data point. My "Show HN" [0] for my side project back in early 2018 is now a 20+ people company. It was bootstrapped by me but we went the VC route later. [0] https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=16608812

Your manager should encourage you to do this among your peers all the time . These are not meetings - with agenda, attendees, notes - these are just discussions among 2 or 3 people.

Fair. I would not call them meetings. They are 2, maybe 3 person “white boarding” sessions. They are problem solving and ideation things.

One thing I learned: do not do meetings for status updates. Those are emails. Meetings are for decisions.

We are using Altinity too. Great support up to now. We are about to go live with it. For us (see my bio for company link) having a company manage the cluster was paramount. We just want to use the data and API, not manage the machines/

Having raised a seed and A-series in the last 1,5 years from top tier VC’s in the B2B space: this post is 100% spot on. Will recommend. We actually used the YC seed and A-series pitchdeck templates the OP mentions. Last thing: everything be

yes, that the theory. In practice, "DevOps" is 100% a position and he/she will probably be on the hook for uptime etc. I don't agree with any of that, but that's how the cookie has crumbled.

I'm more surprised with the 1 person DevOps. Good luck to that person being on-call 24/7, 365 days a year!

Yeah, that is quite new and great. Playwright also has some recording and test playback features. This extension - which I co-authored - is probably still a bit easier to use. And it does both frameworks.

Both Playwright and Puppeteer can use “headless” mode, which actually does not spin up a full, visual window. This makes running in CI or other test environments very effective.

I was thinking exactly the same thing. Given what we know about this hack — a Whatsapp or iMessage essentially taking over his whole phone — this seems plausible.

Great write up. Besides the technical parts, AWS Lambda probably created a ton of new businesses/ startups that otherwise would have been hard or at least expensive to get going.

You are witnessing the move from "developer love" to "enterprise $$" It's a very, very hard thing to balance, as shown by the comments here. Personally, I think they are doing an OK job on this.
