Yep, an easy way to look at it: * The SoC + display is the unit of computing. * The CPU + GPU is the unit of compute. And storage is an opaque object storage device, with backup in the cloud.

This was written in 1991 though quite funny to read today for that reason.

I see your point, the simple fact is dual-booting Linux-based operating systems on hardware intended for use with Microsoft Windows is the norm, and without this source of computer systems a free license is nearly a moot point. If ARM becom

I would suggest using HP/Palm Luna if you want a webkit-based mobile OS. It's apparently using Qt and should be possible to run it on top of android the same as B2G. If Mozilla's work to standardize the APIs goes well the same apps should b

I'm still curious why the target is C++ and not LLVM or a direct ISA. AoT seems very useful, using PHP as a language and not a runtime at least in deployment.

I wonder if they shouldn't shift gears and become the dashboard computer before somebody else does, QNX is still developing automotive solutions and some look a lot like the BB10 demos we've seen. Deep integration with mobile devices (inc

Can I launch an instance of Ubuntu from ubuntu.com without creating an account anywhere? Assume I just wanted to test out Desktop, or a Juju for something. (something like workspot.net was, but with stickiness through the cloud.)

So why didn't their Surface launch site look like that?? And will they be fixing search (other than including Google GSE which would be a vast improvement). Edited to add: the answer to my last question is 'no': http://windows.microsoft.co

Maybe what we need is less of a udacity for coding and one for business, expressed in a way anybody can understand but not as rigid as a bschool or mba program? Reading the Thiel lectures for instance is very educational but without the bas

Guys, it needs a lot of work to compile, but I ported X as an android app a couple of years back intended for this use case: github.com/tmzt/androix

Applets will win the day yet! Everything should be Java and subclass component. Funny, Applets would have nicely filled the gap between java and HTML if they had been UI optional and better integrated with the DOM.

Funny, the exact same question came up today. I'm curious what the actual difference between the two is as it's not apparent. (I use a mixture of function prototype with the extends pattern and CoffeScript which exports a function exporting

Because the touchpad had a fairly open bootloader and we built a more versatile one for it based on the same code base (moboot). The bootloader in the OMAP chip also allows booting from usb and does not require the second stage be signed.

So your understanding is that manufacturers will still be able to add their own "instant boot" capability for media playback or quick access to contacts, but will have to have the system image signed by Microsoft to do this?

Come on Google, use an ARM processor, make it a dongle with a HDMI plug that attaches to the majority of cheap LCD displays, and price it at $99 or free with the first year (per seat) of a Google Apps Enterprise Account. Now add a local Act

This is pretty cool, but it's an OEM-driven product, dependent on the phone maker to enable it. For over a year I 've been working on a port of X to Android as an application, running as a non-privileged user, displaying to a surface alloca
