In Gabriel's defense, I'd say there's something very antithetical between FUD and a detailed description on how to fix the (alleged) problem. I don't know of any other FUD campaign in which a simple solution was provided -- one which won't

The right photograph can rapidly affect one's entire outlook about something, without asking for so much as a look. It's highly efficient that way. Incidentally, was going to comment that the story reminded me of a great Swedish film from a

I'm just impressed with how this was handled. Consider how much more technocratic this is than a news release from ten years ago. Google issues an announcement via blog post. TC and others start to pick it up. And the original author of the

I imagine mzscheme is using select under the hood. But I'm surprised they're not using poll. There's something up with the racket page, so I'm not able to download the mzscheme source just now (via http://arclanguage.org/install ), but tha

That would've been a dealbreaker for me too. I'll update the post to try to make it clearer. When you run 'ipython -p sh' or include 'import ipy_profile_sh', by default everything will be in 'shell mode'. I'm not too sure, but I think it ba

Sort of what I was going to say too. There's something about the raw truth of people doing good things, uncovered by the media -- that seems correlated with Hacker News. But it's an interesting question.

Instead of being pedantic and snarky why don't you enlighten us all instead of using acronyms for everything? Okay, I'll try for a little bit. I should be programming. But a little bit of history. I apologize for sounding pedantic or snar

It's a pretty amazing thing to see a NYT reporter write a five page story about 'derivatives' and not realize that the people she's talking to are referring very specifically to CDS derivatives and heating oil derivatives only. This was my

Had LASIK about five years ago. Mixed feelings. Still somewhat glad I did it, though I wear glasses with .5 prescription in both eyes to make sure vision is perfect and to filter polarize the light, etc. If you're a programmer or staring at

Perhaps that's what makes it rather hard to judge. It's almost a higher-order leak (more words and potential relationships, than actions). So sidestepping all the philosophical dualities at work here (Stewart Brand's free/expensive informat

Great, clarifying talk at Startup School 2009: http://venturebeat.com/2009/10/24/startup-school-gmail-frien... Honestly, a large part of that talk has stayed with me and kept my main outside-of-work project quietly in the background. I'd
