Every art buyer has a financial interest in increasing the value of the art they've bought. One reason that Christies can charge substantial fees is that it serves as a guarantee that the transaction is somewhat real. If an artwork cha

Not even the most orthodox clinician claims that PTSD is a binary thing. It's a label for a continuum of experiences, and you can diagnose it if it affects daily life enough to benefit from treatment. The purpose of labeling disorders,

I had to shut down a company and lay off a dozen people, losing most of my savings and several years work. Friends have experienced much worse. These might not compare to the worst horrors of war, but they rank among life's agonies wit

I'm curious why this is only being discovered now. Haven't we had, for decades, databases with people's eye color and genome? Can't you just run a regression and get a list of genes correlated with color? I'm sure t

Neat! It's interesting how starting with small-scale applications can work better than the theoretically more-efficient stationary applications, because you can iterate and mass-produce. How much of a problem are things in the exhaust

There's a spectrum of generalization-memorization. The extreme case of memorization is that it would only correctly classify images with precisely identical pixel values to the ones in the training set. When we say that people have &qu

In addition to the other reasons mentioned here, the 12v battery is important in emergency situations. The system is quick to disconnect the 400V battery in the case of a crash, and it relies on the 12V battery to run the air bags and hazar

You can run as an LLC until you want to take outside investment or give employee stock options. Then you'll have to create a new company and transfer the IP to it. In general it's not a problem: lots of startups start as LLCs. YC

You eventually have to rewind, if you ever want to run a second program on your reversible computer. Ideally you break things into small chunks of computation where you run it forward, copy the result (at some energy cost), then rewind it.

How do you make the body tilt system work well with a wide range of driver weights? The systems I've seen are spring-balanced, which can only work smoothly for drivers of a certain weight. Too light a driver and it's hard to crank

I claim it's positive sum for society. To be concrete, suppose that moving the troublemakingest 5% out of a school lets the remaining 95% of kids learn 20% more. And the 5% learn about the same. So overall society is up 20% * 95% = 19%
