Are his books (the one about Systems Performance and eBPF) relevant for normal software engineers who want to improve performance in normal services? I don’t work for faang, and our usual performance issues are solved by adding indexes here

We have dashboards for that. We know exactly what our colleagues have been working on in the last 24h (column In Progress), what has been done (column Done). What needs to be done in the future is discussed in planning meetings. With modern

I use multipass to run Ubuntu VMs in my M1. Inside these VMs I run docker containers. I mainly use VMs to keep my Mac “clean” (I don’t wanna install, let’s say npm or go or whatever directly on my Mac). Performance wise: I have several VMs

By that logic, the only one who wins is the company. I would like to believe that most of us, employees, want what’s best for us, employees. If company X was paying N for a SF engineer, and suddenly it finds out that it can pay N/2 for

I don’t like Sundays either. Reasons: - I know Monday is coming, so I need to go to sleep early - The day is shorter since I wake up late because Saturday was a long nice day, and because of previous point - everything is closed. Not that I

I think most of the people would not consider 6am-8am the best time range of the day.

You’re out of home 10 at best (from 8 to 18). Assuming you sleep a regular amount of hours (8h), that leaves you 6h/day for yourself and your family. That’s not enough in my opinion. Luckily for me, covid happened and now I work remote

As a non native English speaker, the hardest to understand are people from England. The easiest to understand are people from the NL. The most comfortable to work with: germans, italians, spaniards… since they make the same grammar mistakes

Exactly. These kind of devs (like OP) cannot be quiet and need to constantly introduce something “cool” so that they can get a good salary raise. The moment they cannot introduce more BS, they move on to another company. The poor other “ave

I’ve known PhDs in philosophy who can barely create slides in power point… while others (like OP) go and use latex, create open source software and use emacs. I’ve never seen such a drastic difference in any other field.

To expand. I guess it depends on the company, as well. I have no idea what engineers at faang do. I can tell you what I have been doing the last decade: - decide what kind of db we should use for our next product. Usually a relational one i

Or perhaps: the task is really not that important and nobody cares. If it should take “3 days of chill work” and nobody complains on day 5, well, perhaps it’s better to not solve the task at all.

Software engineers sometimes spend too much time agonizing over whether they’ve broken any written or unwritten rules. This comes up frequently in settings like code reviews where a reviewer might comment, “This isn’t DRY (don’t repeat your
