VOR navigation is very much still a thing. They've been reducing the number of redundant ground stations lately as part of a project called "Minimum Operational Network", or "MON". (Mostly on affecting the east coas

Do you have any citations from the FAA for that? Given that then ADS-B mandate was just a couple weeks ago, it seems logistically odd that secondary radar would already be turned off. More generally, my understanding was that the FAA was ke

In most places in the US, rescue is free as long as it's legitimate and you weren't being completely reckless. They may chose to charge for false alarms, or if you did something that was completely and unambiguously boneheaded (e.

For the aircraft units (ELTs), it's triggered by g-forces. Almost all aircraft in the US are required to have an ELT beacon installed on-board, though many are still equipped with the old analog (121.5 MHz) technology which isn't

The functionality exists, and many receipts already do get uploaded into the credit card network. It’s called “Level 3” transaction data. This is especially true for air travel, where ticket details are almost always attached to the charge.

We’ve had offline GPS units for decades. You could easily have a database of every stop sign, and it would fit on an SD card.

Venmo is far from ubiquitous. (None of my friends or family have a Venmo account, for instance. They prefer other apps like Square Cash / Google Pay / PayPal, or don’t use payment apps at all.) Debit cards are not popular here bec

ADS-B has always had an "anonymous" option for aircraft using the UAT uplink, as long as they're squawking 1200/VFR. (Similarly, there's long been a way to request that specific aircraft are hidden from the FAA'

This sounds a lot like optical coherence tomography (OCT), which is essentially laser-based “ultrasound” used to image the inside of retinal tissue. (It’s not actually ultrasound, it’s entirely optical but uses similar principles.) https:&

The Elvis Operator is particularly useful because it's such a common pattern in Kotlin, since the language enforces null safety. When you're using a legacy Java API without nullability annotations, the language forces you to expli

Who said anything about diesel? Airlines can already purchase biofuel-derived Jet A. Distribution is still limited, but it is available at a few major airports. For instance, I just took a flight on SAS. They have an option to pay extra to

The problem with that plan is that broadcast radio does not let two stations (in the same general area) share the same frequency, period. So you need to have frequency coordination. Compare with the ISM bands, like 2.4 GHz, where you can us

Japan has this... a common design is to have the bathroom sink drain directly into the toilet's water reservoir, so the grey water is used for the next flush. No changes to plumbing needed, since it's all built into the fixtures.
