Totally agreed. The problem with Flex is it was designed for developer ease first and user experience second. Virtually every code example reimplemented a regular HTML form feature in Flash. You always knew when you hit a Flex app on the we

Wow - nice work! Are there really that many contributors in Alice Springs or is the big spike in the middle of the country just a generic "Australia" stat?

Same deal for the Sex Party. Their civil liberties platform is actually very sensible.

How does that make sense? Nokia was in serious trouble before Elop got there and Android was already well established elsewhere.

The problem with free services is that you're not entitled to demand anything. The customers of YouTube are advertisers, and you are their potential customer. I'd suggest lobbying up the chain of command. btw, if you do use an a

One of the best arguments I came across as an undergrad was Kohlberg's stages of moral development [1]. Of his 3 stages, I've come to the conclusion that most people never evolve past the second stage which is basically "agai

What a great post. Given that Facebook's official motto is to "move fast and break things", I've always considered developing on their platform akin to contracting for the Marquis de Sade.

App looks great Bret. One question - given the focus on collaboration and mobility and the very minimal formatting feature set, why the positioning as a word processor rather than a OneNote/Wiki/Collab note taking tool?

Let's not forget the financial side of the decision. MS were desparate to get a decent hardware partner, willing to pay handsomely and Nokia was bleeding red ink. Google already had all of the Asian manufacturers in their pocket plus M

Nokia was in serious trouble before Elop joined. Remember his "burning platform" memo? It was right on the money. Nokia's nascent smartphone platform would have been stillborn. The head start that Apple and Google had in term

Harper's magazine gave a detailed and amusing guide on "Electing to Leave" the US after Bush's reelection. It covers everything from emigrating to Canada to founding your own micronation. I finally found a copy here: http://www.commondream

This is superior advice to quitting immediately. You're much more likely to get a good offer if you already have a job and don't need a new one (talking in the financial sense here) than if you quit first and then have to negotiate a pack

Mars has no magnetosphere which makes it a non-starter due to radiation unless you live underground or in heavily shielded dwellings. If you have to do that you might as well start at either the Moon or my personal favourite Europa - a vast

Actually I think not running tests on Earth first seems crazy. We've never built a fully sustainable artificial biosphere. Surely that's a fundamental requirement for colonising anything.

Great stuff. If I'm not mistaken this is the first actual launch for the NK-33 engine (rebadged as the AJ26). Those engines are 40 years old and have a higher thrust to weight ratio of anything produced since!
