Totally. I was kind of surprised there weren't really many other implementations, in Go etc. I ended up rolling my own columnar format since I don't need parity, but it would be great to have more implementations, I don't wan

Yeah assuming nothing falls apart with the custom implementation maintenance-wise. Programmers have a hard time focusing on their real goals though, we often re-implement things that really aren't worth the time or money.

If I can get costs down elsewhere I'll maybe just do "unlimited" on some of the accounts, where "unlimited" is some large arbitrary number haha.

:D I wish SMS wasn't so awkward, you're pretty much forced to have a credit system since it's so expensive. I'll probably still do it at some point. Makes it awkward for the customer as well if you have to babysit the cr

Yep, plus most engineering time is worth at minimum $60+/h, which would pay for a year or more with most of these services.

I wrote Apex Ping ( https://apex.sh/ping/ ) for those who want more features and/or don't want to waste the time to save a few bucks :D.

Looks cool! I like the release message stuff, I wanted to add similar to apex(1) at some point, not having a clue what the releases actually are in Lambda makes rollbacks a little tricky.

I have no clue, it seems uncommon in software, but personally I'd choose working 3 hours a day over 200k/yr any day. IMO having a small team constraint is powerful too, you really have to optimize things otherwise you're scre

Indie Hackers is a great site! I have my first little product on there ( http://apex.sh/ping/ ), making just over 3k/m now (50% each month FWIW), sure it's not millions but now I have time/freedom to work

Depends on the product I suppose, if it's niche enough you may not have big competitors at all. I choose to entire a SaaS market that is already monopolized but I'm still paying my bills. That's definitely something to watch

Removed my "clueless" generalization. It's anecdotal, but most that I've encountered (relating to SaaS products) don't have much of a technical background at all, just throwing money at buzzwords, meanwhile they thi

Another alternative: don't build something huge, don't get funding from VCs, build a comfortable business for yourself instead of a gimmicky trend that will be irrelevant in a few years. I feel like this is really underrated these

As someone who wrote Node for roughly 5 years, it's VERY hard to write robust Node code, I would never trust it to mission critical work personally. Go isn't perfect, and it'll likely remain that way but it's much better

I haven't tested it extensively but if you boot up API Gateway and a hello-world Lambda function, the function itself takes maybe 1ms to run, while API Gateway seems to add roughly 150-200ms on top of that.

I've thought about adding a smaller plan, I still might at some point but it certainly reaches a level where it's not really worth it, especially since I want to provide equal support to everyone. I'll have to experiment with

Thanks! Agreed, I have that on the list, quick sanity check is always good. Taking a bit of a break to work on other products but I'll keep adding to it.

I wrote the apex(1) tool and created https://apex.sh/ping/ with Lambda, in general it has been great, has scaled flawlessly since launch (granted I'm only doing ~8M requests / day). Conceptually I think it&#x

+1 for NSQ, it's not a magic bullet in terms of scalability but you can get quite far. When I was at Segment we were pushing an easy 2-3B messages per day through it, if not more with message "amplification" internally.

If you're just getting into things Elm might be a good bet for front-end. Maybe you'll get fewer contract gigs but the current state of JS is a mess, might as well skip it (for now at least).

I think it depends greatly on the cost of supporting the free plans, mine just went a little out of control, I was getting ~100 or more users per day. If it was really cheap to support them it might be worth the marketing side of things. An

I (Apex Ping) went down the road of playing with newer more hyped tech like React etc, not really necessary for the project, and I can't say it saved any time (if anything wasted time) but still interesting. AWS Lambda on the other han

There's a lot more to it than that, and I'm currently supporting ~2000 users on the free plan as well (though I'm phasing that plan out). Ping is running in 7 regions, has an Elasticsearch cluster for logging, another for the

Global installs are fine IMO, what's not fine is lack of versioning. I would say for Node/NPM at least, the lack of global installs is a pretty big burden, you end up pulling in 500MB for a trivial application. The same versioning

I kindddd of feel this way about the "global" context as well, but it's one of those sketchy-yet-handy things haha. Though beyond react-router and redux using it I haven't touched it personally.

I wanted something small that I could get off the ground without spending a year or two on development. It's also a fantastic fit for Lambda, and I had already built the apex(1) tool so it seemed like a decent place to start. As far as
