Climate models say we need to be removing about 10 billion tons per year of carbon dioxide from the air by 2050, in addition to massive decarbonization. So we need trees, this stuff, and a lot more. A new $1T industry in the next 27 years.

Ah you're totally right, my bad. Better to say "The goal of these systems isn't to neutralize the planet's emissions all by themselves "

The goal of these systems isn't to neutralize the planet's emissions (edit: by themselves). We need to both massively decarbonize and remove carbon from the air. The goal of these removal systems is to clean up the last bit. That&

This system proposes removing 30 millions tons per year. A tree captures about 20 tons of carbon dioxide per year. So this is the equivalent to 1.5 million trees. Trees grow at about 800 trees per acre. This effectively matches the space of

Yes, burning fossil fuels is really inefficient. We should stop doing that. We have better options now. And, climate models say we need to remove 10 billion tons of carbon dioxide from the air every year in 2050. It's really inefficien

Yes it's only scratching the surface. Carbon removal needs to effectively become a $1T/year industry in the next 27 years to meet climate models. That's a top 20 industry by today's standards.

Yes the scale today is small. But climate models say we need to be removing about 10 billion tons per year of carbon dioxide from the air by 2050, in addition to massive decarbonization. Net negative. Therefore, it's not an "if&qu

Thanks! I wonder if there's a digital game or model version of this. Feedback loops can be pretty entertaining if presented well.

Discontinuous effects, yes. A stable climate functions more like a light switch than a dimmer switch. There is an "off", and once we go there getting back is really hard. It's almost like a one way switch. As one example of a

Yeah the headlines end up all sounding similar after awhile. Another challenge is the report itself is pretty dry and emotionless (for example, every line of the PDF is numbered). Here's a link to the new Synthesis report referenced in

I hear what you're saying. The example of the albedo effect of solar panels makes the most sense, the trade off of absorbing heat vs catching photons. I didn't follow the heat pollution example, perhaps because the heat and greenh

Reducing emissions from the start, manufacturing, all sound like important parts of the solution! If you're looking for resources to get started, I linked Project Drawdown and others in another comment in this thread.
