Xcode has taken a big step forward with version 4. It still has some teething troubles (it seems to get sluggish after about six hours of being open, at least on my machine), but features like code completion actually work now. Most of the

The British style would actually include the period/full stop in this case, since it's quoted speech and the quoted speech ends with a period.

I've always pronounced it like "pie pie". (But then again, maybe that's because I already knew the "py" was the first syllable of the word "python"?)

Yeah, here in New Zealand tight caps are the norm (I'm on 60Gb, and I pay through the nose for it). Open WiFi is rare; no-one's quite that altruistic.

The story, characters, art direction, music and puzzles were brilliant. I'm pretty sure the interface could have been better, though. Steering Manny through the environments felt like driving a malfunctioning tank at times.

Yeah, that's the route we took with Scarlett on the iPhone as well — there's just an icon you can touch to highlight everything of interest. I'm not sure why it hasn't been a standard feature of the genre; maybe some people enjoy pixel-hunt

You may also enjoy Scarlett and the Spark of Life, which was made specifically for the iPhone: http://launchingpadgames.com/games/scarlett/ (Disclosure: I'm one of the developers.)

Like Alex, I can heartily recommend Cocos2D: http://www.cocos2d-iphone.org/ We made a Monkey Island-style point-and-click (well, point-and-tap) adventure. It was a fairly complex project, but Cocos always felt empowering rather than limit

Stencyl looks like a lot of fun, kudos! And am I right that some of the linked games have even managed to score themselves sponsorship?

Have a look into http://flashgamelicense.com if you haven't already. If you have a quality game, you can actually end up with a bit of a bidding war going on between potential licensees, and most deals allow you to sell again to other sit

It's often discussed here, I think, because game development on constrained-but-not-too-constrained platforms like iOS and Android presents an interesting set of 'hacker' challenges: how much performance can you extract from the CPU and GPU

Coming from a small nation, doing anything tech-focused and not launching internationally is hard for me to wrap my head around. But I guess the factors in play here are a) a huge domestic market and more significantly b) the inevitable l

Unfortunately the iPhone port of Monkey Island has an awkward interface, where the screen functions as sort of a trackpad for a cursor. (Full disclosure: I've been working on a made-for-iPhone adventure, so I'm probably predisposed to be cr

Yes, good point. And some of these street views (thanks everyone - most interesting!) actually look okay for walking as long as the traffic was light and slow.

Woah, we've had some 'pack 'em in' zoning here in New Zealand but I've never seen anything where they left out footpaths entirely. Has anyone got a representative Google street view link for SW Portland or something similar? (And is this re

Yes, from my (New Zealand, although not a farmer) point of view I'd say the ending of farm subsidies has been hugely beneficial to NZ's economy.

While verses in Proverbs arguably align with the sentiment, the actual "spare the rod, spoil the child" construction is from a poem by Samuel Butler.

Surely if the language specification calls semicolons optional then any compressor worth its salt should honor that? The YUI Compressor, at least, copes with semicolon-devoid Javascript just fine.

Don't be fooled by the high number of updates for TF2 - it was already a quality product upon release. The updates aren't just fixes; many include genuine new features, maps and game modes. I think the idea is to keep community interest hig

IIRC, the Objective-C (plus C and C++) limitation is only for apps distributed through the App Store. Presumably ad-hoc distribution is just fine for this type of project. :^)

I don't think I've ever stored a binary file in my source-code control system. (Hint: your VCS is not your backup server.) I do small-scale game development (Flash and iPhone) with a team of 2-3. We've always committed image, audio and an

But surely the distinction with a 'subscription' is more than just a language game? To my mind, a one-time fee for content strongly implies (by way of cultural expectation if nothing else) that I own rather than license that content. On the

I would go further, and venture that 'serious hackers who will make good HN citizens' and 'people for whom the above problem is trivial' are two different sets (though the intersection of those sets might be significant).
