In what way? The article states clearly why the change was made, it makes sense to me.

Is the modern definition any different than the older one? It just means systems with feedback loops. A motion sensitive video camera is “cybernetic”. So is the Facebook feed algorithm and self-checkout at the grocery store.

Teslas (unit of magnetic flux) have the opposite problem. An MRI—the machine with the highest magnetic field most people will ever encounter—has an operating field of 7 Tesla.

Gatún Lake is 425 km^2. It provides the drinking water for Panama City. It has a watershed covering a large portion of the country. You might be underestimating the scale of the problem.

Sorry to make you feel bad, but that exact realization is the reason I don’t do remote work anymore. (I still scroll on my phone here and there!) A cynic might retort that reading a book is also “doing nothing”, but I think there is a certa

See the movie Eighth Grade for an anxiety inducing exploration of this theme. My personal take is that not having community is devastating, and the issue with social media is that it makes you think you have community in your brain, but you

In a similar vein there is there’s this video explaining why phi is somehow “more irrational” than other numbers. It looks like a special case of the same kind of analysis you are talking about https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=

+1. Using statistics about a population to make determinations about a specific outcome is often fallacious anyway. “70% of businesses fail” might sound like it is a bad idea to start one, but of course every business succeeds or fails on

“ France does not encourage innovation and investment”… in foreign media companies. They’re using the tax to fund local investment in music.

Historically Amazon gives devs some number of weeks to find new work internally if they cut a department. Sales and admin aren’t normally so lucky…

Maybe it is just circumstance but I had been working with devs in Hyderabad since at least 2016 when I was at Amazon. I’m sure they are expanding the workforce there, though

It is interesting that the word “cybernetics” doesn’t really come up anymore. I think the optics of calling a system “AI” is less jarring. You have the AI over here and then you have the totally unrelated thing that it is controlling/c

I had a database that was in a boot-crash loop because it had a corrupted innodb_history_list for a given table. Everything would be ok if we could just delete the table, but that would involve opening a session and that wouldn’t be possibl

this all sounds great for rich people and like hell for everyone else. AI learns that brown people exist, women become data farms, clippy is your new boss, children are our future profits. There is some kind of satire in here about how tech

Having worked in shelters, these are all nice ideas and would take an amount of funding and staffing tantamount to freeway construction. Except freeway construction pays more and is a lot more pleasant.

Anything that can be handled by a compiler can be hacked to interface with anything that can be handled by an interpreter. That’s the kind of fundamental daoist “code is data is code” that underlies the power of computing.

Yeah but at those internships you aren’t taught how to build quality software, just how to ship a SPA that connects to an API in 15 weeks (or you’re not hired). It is a good peek into the professional software world though!
