I'm not sure if this is true anymore. Some years ago chess.com increased bullet ratings by 150 points to better align them with blitz ratings [0]. [0] https://www.chess.com/news/view/10-minute-chess-now-rapid-r

What's the alternative here? Do you want them to replicate their infrastructure across different cloud providers with automatic fail-over? That sounds -- heck -- I don't know if modern devops is really up to that. It would probabl

What setup are you comparing this to? In the past silicon Macs plus, say, Rancher Desktop have been happy to pretend to build an x86 image for me, but those images have generally not actually worked for me on actual x86 hardware.

Interesting, I just learned about matharena.ai. Google cherry-picks one result where they're the best here, but in the overall results, it's still O3 and o4-mini-high who are in the lead.

I think you underestimate how abysmal many product developers' understanding of databases is:-). It's less about making people respectable experts, more about teaching basic safety principles so they won't do too much damage.

It's definitely an overly-broad generalization. But these mental models would still improve how many product engineers work with databases, at the expense of a very simple explanation. I think the interesting question is like, if I hav

I think the distinction here is between "I understand that X is a solution to Y", vs. "I understand that X is BASICALLY a mashup of A and B according to scheme C." A lot of times, people reach for X when they have a vagu

It seems like the author just really hates working in an office, and interprets office perks as traps to make you spend more time there. I too prefer working from home, but I also see that as a likely anomalous perk and can't be too up

AI is far better in style than in substance. That is, an AI-written solution will have all the trappings of expertise and deep thought, but frankly is usually at best mediocre. It's sort of like when you hear someone make a very eloque

If you use a deterministic sampling strategy for the next token (e.g., always output the token with the highest probability) then a traditional LLM should be deterministic on the same hardware/software stack.

Some important context missing from this post (IMO) is that the data set presented is probably not a very good fit for linear regression, or really most classical models: You can see that there's way more variance at one end of the dat
