The real name policy was a defining feature of Facebook. A site that doesn't have that can hardly be called the same thing.

Facebook uses git. Many open source projects with more than 100 contributors do too, of course.

This is just as bad for users as Apple's own patent shenanigans. Nobody "wins" these things but the lawyers.

Especially since it's talking about old Java 1.4 collections, with no mention of changes in the last seven years!

How far do you need to go down the list of top websites by traffic before you hit a site running on a Windows stack that isn't owned by Microsoft? Quite a long way, I believe. Probably more than 50.

A key difference is that Haskell functions can only have one type signature, so you need to explicitly make "Bunny" and "Lion" data constructors for "Species". Multimethods operate on multiple types . You can fake multimethods in Haskell w

Sorry, is there a typo in here somewhere? Are "idomenu" and "ido-menu" different things?

Somewhat related question: Do these fluent interfaces provide any real advantage over named parameters? The wikipedia example of: config.setColor("blue").setHeight(17) seems like it could just as easily be written: config.update(

You can only imperfectly emulate anything more than a regular language in a finite reality (since a pushdown automaton has an infinite stack). A PC is just a big DFA.

Totally off topic, but I was really surprised that the intern salaries at Fog Creek in 2006 were $750/week, whereas today good interns get about $1500/week + housing in the Bay Area. Have salaries actually doubled in five years?

Someone in that thread mentioned that SPDY is used to achieve the speedups in Amazon's Silk browser. It does look like we're seeing the beginnings of something big.

Emacs shell mode was my first thought too. It doesn't try to implement a new standard for pipes, though. The idea of using invisible control characters as metadata is interesting. (My biggest complain about shell mode is that it's impossibl

They're still better than basing your opinions on anecdotal data. For example, I previously believed that the majority of HN users were in the Bay Area, mostly because it seems like users mention that they're there a lot. I was probably bas

There ought to be a database of companies that give offers with very short expirations. Not necessarily condemning the practice, but it would be good to know. Yelp, for example, routinely gives offers with a 5-day acceptance window.

Adding new datatypes vs. adding new functions is the core tension between OOP and FP. It's really easy to add new functionality to existing datatypes in functional programming, and really easy to add new datatypes in OOP. There's some very

I was looking for a job in the Bay Area in September (similar situation, non-US citizen). I never used a "job search" site, though, I just researched companies I was interested in and applied through their sites. This worked out fine... mos

I'm a heavy user, and I still have no idea what the buttons do because I exclusively use the keyboard shortcuts. I'd assume most really heavy Gmail users avoid using the mouse.

This observation would work just as well if "C++" or "Java" were substituted for lisp, so I guess those languages will never "win" either.

What's up with building an editor instead of a general IDE toolkit (like Scion or Rope)? I'm not going to stop using Emacs just to get Dart support, so folks ought to focus on the general case.

It's not like you can join two Facebook accounts you made with different emails either. That alone makes it clear that this is isn't "basic functionality".
