According to some of his earlier tweets, getting the red phosphorus is hard, since Sigma-Aldrich won't sell it unless your lab is DEA vetted. Nothing unsurmountable though.

Is there anyone out there collating data on YouTube suggestions in a widespread way? Like a browser extension that tracks when and what videos appear vs which ones are watched. I assume doing this would be a privacy nightmare, and not captu

Surprised but not surprised that the generic 'switch' page mentions chrome specifically. (visited on android/fennic (Firefox rebrand)) Did it used to say IE at some point?

$600 still seems really high to me as a European. Busses here are more expensive than flying, however. Even if the bus ticket itself might be slightly cheaper than in the us. Hopefully costs keep going down, inflation adjusted.

do you really need to get a vendor number? I've assumed there's an unregulated section somewhere. I think most cheap devices I've tangled with use the vendor number of whoever made the chipset. (or a random one, because chine

I think CA expressly forbids it now, since loyalty-programmes were turning into a privacy risk.

There was an amendment for that. (two, really) I'd expect some workaround to be done, like tying interstate funding to the drinking age. Would be sad to see the feds go after Oregon/Alaska in the same way.

I've seen reused plastic bottles, and even bought and returned one filled with orangeade before. German company, I think. Dead giveaway was the outside looking super scuffed up, and it being thick as hell. Also, it having a deposit add

This page covers way more than just utility poles. Very cool page, on a strangely named domain.

How good is Congress at passing low-impact (ones that aren't especially political) laws currently? That's the main holdup I can think of. Now I'm wondering if there's some measure of throughput for things like this. e.g.

Thank goodness everything on the site is licensed creative commons, so you can stand up a replacement pretty quick. Mathoverflow even owns their own domain.

There's a lot of nuance to how SO and other sites they run work. Turning programmer focused FAQs into a collaborative site was the route it kind of had to take. Reading through the joelonsoftware blog was kind of eyeopening, since I di

Reminds me of enwp.org for Wikipedia redirects/shortening. I assume a German owns it, since dewp.org does the same thing. Seems dangerous to use, if you come to rely on it, but sometimes handy.

Anything covering Magdalene laundries or other catholic institutions in Ireland are pretty relevant too. She did spend a bunch of her childhood in one.

Whenever I hear about these levies, I always wonder what's stopping someone from spinning up a 'record label' and attempting to claim the funds.

It's probably not going to be the model they go with, but I can imagine epic games doing 'giveaways' of music from bandcamp. I think their current aim is to streamline licencing for video games, which would be smaller, but st

I am so glad GCC came and took over, even if I didn't have to live through this era. The standard choice being free and good (best, in many cases) really can't be overstated.

NASA plans to have other places to send astronauts by then. The ISS will almost certainly have its life extended again before that though.

Anyone interested in going whole-hog with this, forking Java, and making char utf8 too? I'm guessing it's not worth it, even aside from legal costs.

I am a fan of this kind of technical wizardry. Anyone ever notice and mention it? I expect I'd only ever notice it if I were copy/pasting, and probably wouldn't Ctrl-a anyway.

It's a very strange series of events that led us here, with various stages of 'oh no' and 'oh yes' events happening. Like Apple trying to region-lock emojis, or whoever decided merging CJK together was a good idea,

I think most everything with a plug on it is covered by WEEE, and has a deposit baked into the price. Sellers taking returns is also mandated, but the real meat is in getting paid the deposit when you properly recycle the electronic.

Fusion, specifically, is meant to be the one 'too cheap to meter'. The thought being it'd be ready soon, and grouping both kinds of nuclear together worked as better branding for getting govt. funding.
