As a Ruby developer this video about Pharo smalltalk made me a smalltalk believer — not surprising because Ruby was heavily inspired by smalltalk. https://youtu.be/HOuZyOKa91o

And I don’t want work bleeding into every aspect of my life. When I’m out doing something I’m not working. When I’m working, I’m working - and it stays in the place that I work. Bring tethered to work 24/7 isn’t freedom from work, it

America is at-will employment and employers can basically make up whatever rules they want. California has some labour laws with regard to hand tools for tradespeople (and maybe other things I’m not familiar with) but pretty much everywher

They can require certain “brands” of tools if it’s deemed necessary for some other requirement of the job. In the case of Copilot it’s because Microsoft’s tools already check all the boxes for their enterprise partner requirements and have

It’s generally legal for employers to require employees to supply their own tools as a condition of employment as long as it doesn’t reduce their wage to below minimum wage. Why would developers be any different?

Friend of mine got a new job. He’s required to and only allowed to use Copilot (because muh trusted enterprise partner). He also has to pay for his subscription/usage out of pocket. Of course they didn’t tell him this until after on-

Hard disagree. All of my favourite games of all time have dynamic difficulty systems. Not stupid stuff like levelling up enemies in Bethesda games - but actual skill based games that get harder depending on how good you are at it: Resident

It’s not black magic. We know how these things work. They had the guardrails off and gave it a task and it did it in a roundabout way because these things have no ethics or judgement. If you did this you’d already be in jail.

So wait…they were specifically testing cyber capability and they didn’t notice it doing funny business until after it was done? Did they just…let it do whatever with nobody watching?! Are they flipping serious with this?

Code generation was never the hard part. Knowing wtf you’re supposed to actually write was always much harder and this hasn’t changed. It’s not hard to write a loop or an if-statement. It’s hard to actually solve a problem with them at

Just bought a B550 and a Ryzen 5 5500. Both were on sale on newegg. 30-40% off so and under 200 bucks. Grabbed a new case since my current one is practically falling apart. Will be back in business in a couple days. Thanks for the advi

I’ve been pricing out my various options but the notion of replacing a 10 year old motherboard with another 10 year old motherboard is kinda lousy. The PC I replaced when I bought this one was such a huge improvement. My options basically b

My own PC died and now I’m locked out of my entire Steam library for the foreseeable future. A $2000 PC is literally a downgrade from what I bought 10 freaking years ago. What the freaking hell.
