I love critiques of consequentialism, but I found this piece to be fundamentally free of meaning. Then I looked up the author's bio. "I am a Professor of Economics." Well that explains it. The only thing worse than an economi

I think we agree more than we disagree. I believe we need to seriously study the effect of microplastics on the human body. I believe the federal government should follow California's example (at a minimum) and take a heavier hand in r

I don't deny that there is more and more research every day about the negative impacts of microplastics on the human body. From my place of relative ignorance, it still seems that more sweeping claims like "Microplastics are respo

I'm gonna need some more hard evidence before I believe that microplastics in the human body play a strong causative role in both infertility and changing IQ scores (and first you have to convince me of the import of IQ scores). It

The current Edison mythbusting is actually very similar to the Mother Teresa mythbusting, in that it's a vast overcorrection to the veneration, and relies on a lot of myths itself. Like you said, somebody can be a brilliant inventor an

Thanks for engaging seriously even though I was being snarky. More than I deserve. For starters, is the kind of problem solving that goes into coding trivially applicable to other problem spaces? That's why I used the crossword metapho

We are disagreeing. In my experience computer scientists are the dumbest "tech people" of all. I'm being facetious here, because I'm on a forum dominated by coders and it's a cheap thrill to troll a little bit. So t

I think they would fare far worse. Because of the way that our economy is structured, tech people are overpaid and overvalued, and thus have an inflated sense of their own importance which causes them to overestimate their intelligence.

As somebody who is mentally ill and has tried lots of different drugs in a very unscientific way, with mixed results, you'd think I would agree with you. But actually, I don't. Take lithium for example. We have now over 100 years

Oh for sure. But I wanted to challenge your binary analogy that Wealth is to Men as Physical Beauty is to Women. We live in an across the board vain society, and women bear the brunt of that, but not all of it.

Being young and slender confers social status to men, they just don't like to admit it. Look at how much money and effort wealthy men put into keeping up appearances (plastic surgery, hair transplants, exercise regimens, etc). Women fa

There's a difference between a work of fiction having compelling themes and a political message and the way that some sci-fi fans seem to treat their favorite novels. There's almost a sense that the work is predictive rather than

Inspired by a Heinlein novella? No thank you. Why is it that sci-fi authors trick otherwise smart people into thinking they have the key to some kind of universal truth as opposed to just being skilled prose stylists with a sense of drama?
