Allow me to introduce you to the concepts of 'roommates' and 'children'. (Some of my colleagues returned to the office as soon as it was allowed, just to spend some time away from their families.)

Here on the European continent having enough space for a dedicated office is literally luxurious.

Being Russian, I really wouldn't recommend moving to Russia. Yes, if you're a foreigner you won't be conscripted, but the economy has been severely destabilized. We might actually be in for 1990's scale social upheaval,

Accidentally commit a huge video to a code repo (stupid as it sounds, this actually happened at a past employer). Make commits with unreadable messages, huge-ass commits with tens of logically different changes, split a single logical featu

Which is why I don't love Mercurial, because once you mess up your repo, it's messed up forever. IMO "easy to break but easy to fix" is better than "hard to break but impossible to fix", and there ain't no

Come on, getting comfortable with a couple of incantations takes people a whole _year_? Because you don't need much more when you're starting out.

The rouble is not pegged to gold reserves. That was just a proposal, coming from one of the least relevant members of the State Duma. (Not that the State Duma actually has any relevant members.) Edit: sorry, that was actually Nikolai Patrus

Before the invasion you could buy gold coins/bars for RUB from most major banks, but the cut the bank took was of course large. I have no idea how it is now.

With the sanctions, imports have fallen but exports are still going strong. The Central Bank now requires all exporters to exchange at least 50% of foreign profits into roubles. So, there's a lot of demand for RUB, not so much for USD.

Russians are in fact allowed to buy USD (provided the bank actually has the physical dollar notes). The earlier prohibition on buying foreign currency has been relaxed.

One of my best investments ever was a good sleeping mask. These do not let any light in (even around the edges if it's a good fit), and unlike blackout curtains they're portable.

The Norwegian border may look remote on a map, but it's close to Murmansk which is an extremely important seaport. (Not claiming Norway is a legitimate threat to Russia, just pointing out it's not that remote.)

The US, UK and Russia all claim the Budapest Memorandum is not legally binding. So in that respect, a new treaty would indeed be better (although I can see a legally binding treaty being broken by Putin as well).
