Calling him a nonphysicist isn't correct. Woit's just not employed as a physics professor. Instead he's got a nontenured math post at Columbia. Given the number of tenured physics jobs available versus the number of graduates, it's not exac

I hope that you don't agree the idea that people don't have to pay taxes because they disliked Bush. It's insane.

Ah, it was all my fault that you said what you did. All of the personal nastiness, the name-calling, on this thread is coming from you and Phil. He introduced it, calling me a "stupid prick." Your claim that I wasn't an adult or even a "rea

You go off and be intellectually curious in the kiddy pool then. I'll stick around the deep end, even if there might be sharks sometimes. And contrary to your pronouncements about its nature, Hacker News is not any sort of kiddy pool.

In point of fact, it didn't. I read all the way through the original article. I gave up on Mr. pseudo-Nice Guy. I ignored the guy who didn't call me a prick. Therefore, in contradiction of your argument, meanness and name-calling enabled

Good points. But not everyone cares about maximizing karma. For most people, it just happens. What karma does is allow people to find out that you aren't just a troll even if a particular comment is rated at -10.

I like Karma, because it means that established members don't have to worry too much about how any particular post will be received, and can present unpopular points of view without too much penalty.

You more or less said that the grandparent was wrong "just because." You were telling someone that he was wrong without any argument. Exactly what you complained about with me, btw. The only possible response to that sort of thing is snark.
