I figured the hackers around here would understand that these things are more a function of popularity, with one of the variables being the core security design. Thinking you're "safe" using any popular software is pretty much living in den

I felt very lonely-- being the only one during Guido's keynote to get up and tell him how much we didn't like the GIL (in the form of a Py3k question). I'm quite glad to hear this sentiment getting some renewed backing. I mentioned it many

I was at Pycon this week. While I'd like to see no highlighted sponsor talks in the lightning talks (I was bumped partially due to them eating up available time), I didn't feel like the rest of the con was particularly bad. The talks from W

Do you have references for "nothing even approaches"? Specifically compared to Sphinx? The only comparisons I've found are showing sphinx coming ahead in many indexing/search cases (if only slightly). See my other comment on this thread wit

I see a lot of comments from those preferring Macs. As much as I respect that, a lot of people reading this site are bootstrapping startups and I'd never be able to recommend going that route unless you need to use Mac-forte apps (or are de

I've heard good things about Lucene, but we use Sphinx: http://www.sphinxsearch.com/ For our tests, it indexed much faster than the common Lucene implementations, and for our needs was also a tad faster overall. I haven't tried the newest

I'm reading this book currently. A lot of it is covered in traditional AI courses in CS programs, but I like seeing the Pythonic representations of some of the concepts. The site itself seems kind of neat, feels like you'd need to use it fo

Tiny URLs got a resurgence in a world of SMS and Twitter. (Full disclosure: I have a simple URL shrinking service myself, http://ri.ms -- not pretty, but functional)

I did it simply by renting from the bigger companies at their smallest levels for the shortest periods, asking their support team about the service and gleaning what one can from those. Does require some money to do that, though.

Their comparison of FF2 and IE7 don't match mine-- FF2 is taking up incredible amounts of memory over usage versus IE7 for me. Probably the extensions, but, man, I'd love to know which ones.

I run/host a community of Python new entry-level scripters. This seems perfect for them to see so they'll understand a little more about what they're seeing. I'd welcome any other cheat sheets which you prefer, though. I was actually impres
