From your description, you qualify for rent control, which means your landlord can only raise you rent at the rate of inflation (with certain exceptions). From http://www.sftu.org/rentcontrol.html : San Francisco's rent control law covers

My current employer found me through LinkedIn. I get messages from recruiters on there every now and then that I probably wouldn't have gotten otherwise, so it seems like it was worth the 15 minutes it took me to setup and maintain my accou

That would have been a good article. It's too bad that the only content here is "IMVU uses memcached and it reduces database load". Not exactly earth shattering. I have no idea why this is getting upvoted.

It didn't occur to me that I could hire someone until I saw this: http://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/bipan/i_used_to_have_a... It just so happened that the previous day when my girlfriend asked me what I wanted for my birthday, I gave

I want a personal assistant for 5-10 hours a week. Not a virtual one because most of the things I want done are in meat space. Stuff like filling out forms, doing my laundry, waiting in line for me at the DMV, and dropping off my netflix re

The people behind Color of Change (they do a lot of other projects too) are hiring python/Django developers in the bay area by the way, full time and contract. If you forward me your info I'd be happy to send it upstream. My contact info is

If you're actually making average software developer pay, how is it that you don't have money left over at the end of the month to tuck away into savings? You're either spending like crazy or you're being underpaid. Anyways, if your passion

Trac is great and plugs in really easily to SVN. It's at least worth playing around with since so many open source projects use it. I wrote a Django middleware that uses Trac's xmlrpc plugin to automatically create Trac tickets for errors.

I agree, I wish more companies would lay out up front how much they expect to pay you. Every super talented developer I know is already working a full time job or it's equivalent. I've found it's a lot easier to lure people away from their

All right, in the black-scholes example I admit that those are not axioms in the traditional sense. Maybe the expected utility axioms would be a better example: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Expected_utility_hypothesis#von...

You'd be surprised. The first thing that comes to mind is modern macro-economic forecasting, which is built on a host of controversial axioms. These forecasts are little better than Roman augury, and one could argue they are actually a net

Not every programmer majored in CS. In fact, these days unless you majored in CS or EE, you probably won't get any exposure to lower level programming unless you learn it on your own. For people who get into programming via other domains (m
