I don't think you're ever too old. But before you create a popular programming language, perhaps you ought to aim for an unpopular, slow and crappy one first. At least then you won't discourage yourself if it doesn't tak

It's rumoured that they _did_ build some sort of pontoon out of barrels, to transport the elephants captured by Lucius Caecilius Metellus after the Battle of Panormus. The story's widely attributed to Strabo or Pliny the Elder but

Having a working version of some code to refine is often helpful. I most often just use the output as better documentation that I can interact with. I'll definitely grant you that I never end up using AI generated code directly in prod

I’ve not really spent much time with Datomic in anger because it’s super weird, but is any of this surprising? Datomic transactions are basically just batches and I always thought it was single threaded so obviously it doesn’t have a lot of

I too preferred the home button, not just for all the navigation features, but also because TouchID worked so well, and FaceID angers me basically every single time I have to use it.

The only tradeoff here is the pure NOTIFY approach (if you don't care about losing notifications) can sit there on a single connection, and probably performs a bit better than having a bunch of workers in contention for that connection

Yeah, Dijkstra is more for graph search where maybe you have weights but not actual vectors. But this does give a nice visualisation of how far you can get from a single point in a given time.

Surprised at the small size of the dataset here. Surely it’s possible to record thousands if not millions of results… has someone been able to do this? Seems like the simplest thing to do here would just be to develop some sort of plus/

Okay, well, no sale I guess. Stockfish's training dataset is mostly self-play games from an engine directly inspired by AlphaZero. It moved to neural network evaluation after a fork based on a paper that cites AlphaZero. It plays chess

Where do the evaluations come from? The idea that Stockfish isn't benefiting hugely from Google having created and advertised AlphaZero is preposterous, can we please just stop?

It's a neural network trained on self-play games (many of them lifted from Leela Zero). I get that it's a different shape of network, but people really seem touchy about crediting Google with the kick up the bum that led us here.

For whatever it's worth, the NNUE training dataset contains positions from Leela games and several generations of self-play. Stockfish wouldn't be where it is if not for Google's impact. AlphaFold will likely have a similar i

The original NNUE paper cites AlphaZero[0]. The architectures are different because NNUE is optimized for CPUs and uses integer quantization and a much smaller network. I don't think one could credibly claim that it would have come abo

And then what happened is AlphaZero changed the professional game in various interesting ways, and all its ideas were absorbed into Stockfish. A little bombast is forgivable for technology that goes on to have a big impact, and I don’t doub

Perhaps one day the engineers and designers will make peace, the former conceding the need to be technically correct despite wildly successful UI, the latter adding bevels back to buttons.

This makes me wonder what you could achieve if instead of iteratively growing the grid, or worrying about pruning or regularization, you governed network topology with some sort of evolutionary algorithm.

I have no beef with the actual content or conclusions, but it’s a shame the article is framed the way it is, because I don’t think we can rigorously define the goalposts for what qualifies as a future LLM. It could just as easily have been

The original idle RPG was sitting on a character creation screen re-rolling your stats for hours if not days on end. I'm pretty sure I played the character creation bit of MegaTraveller more than the actual game.

There’s no shame in just having complex constructors to check some invariants in non-structural ways. At least you still capture and enforce the transition.

I listened to a lot of Apple Music recommendations while getting my three kids to sleep over the years. I would say that in my 40s I’m discovering more new music, and music I genuinely love, than I did in all my teens. I don’t get to go to
