I should have been more specific. I am aware of some automatic metro systems but in my opinion the challenges they overcame are very different from the challenges freight or even long distance passenger trains would have to overcome.

This is only true for the red and blue lines though. And since they only have one track for each direction they must interrupt the service to do maintenance.

Isn't the price offered by Arianespace subsidized though? I could imagine that the EU is ok to subsidize to get market share in the private market but wouldn't be too happy to subsidize the US department of defense.

This is basically the french system, the bank does not even look at your credit history/revenue stream if your parents makes a decent amount of money and cosign, however getting a loan without a cosigner is almost impossible.

It might be some kind of bias but I have always felt like when it comes to cars average Joe is at least capable of changing a tire, but when it comes to computers the very same person does not even seem to try.

I might be missing something but I think that the situation on Earth would have to be beyond cataclysmic for Mars (a dead planet without atmosphere or a magnetic field) to be a better place.
