Someone who gets it! I'm doomed to stay with a 2010 vintage Lenovo T-series by the looks.

I don't enforce parental controls. This is about banner ads and web sites forcing you to download apps from the app store.

I don't enforce parental controls (restrictions). They are too old for that crap. However I don't want adverts in web pages that have detected an iPad forever redirecting to the app store. Then when you switch back to safari they

Well my $50 of this was blown on my wife and kids' 3 iPads buying in app upgrades for apps that were supposedly free but weren't and paying cash for apps that supposedly block ads but don't and apps that transfer files that d

As most of it was Sunday for me, I spent some time working on my IOCCC 2014 entry after reading carefully through the 2013 entries for inspiration. That and r/wtf which is slightly addictive if not completely wrong .

Does it really matter if you hear it or not though? My phone is in my pocket. I don't need to respond to every minor notification. The only important one is when it rings and it makes a lot of noise then as well.

Good for me and I'm no hipster. I've worn a Casio F91W for about 25 years so every decade I'm in fashion at least once :)

Actually the cheap ones were really naff and relied on correctly sized notes and a mask and backlight with a couple of phototransistors. A pretty picture cut to the right size would work. I think it was enough to prevent casual errors rathe

Similar. A friend of mine used an epson stylus printer (new on the market then) and a scanner to copy £20 notes. They were inserted into the change machine in the local gambling arcade type place. It was stupid enough to accept a single sid

Actually I am considering C. It's pretty easy to write a CGI that Apache can call. Process startup is pretty cheap on UNIX and it's secure if you suexec, chroot it and know how to write C code that isn't full of holes. http:

Yes but it only takes one eval or config flag set wrongly for that to be moot. It's perfectly possible to write a pure C web page that is 100% secure. It just requires experience. The same with all other languages. PHP doesn't pro

Probably contrary to common belief here but the headline is correct IMHO. However this is because web programming as a whole is a crock from top to bottom. PHP doesn't really add or subtract from that other than lowering the barrier to

Yeah you have to have a lot of engineering savvy to build stuff off blog articles and work out the missing bits. I've built a few things this way including a complicated 20m transceiver and there are many pitfalls. Many a project end

This doesn't surprise me one bit if its a hypervisor hack. You have to design in this stuff from day one rather than tack it on as an afterthought. To quote Theo de Raadt on virtualization, who I agree with: "x86 virtualization i

Actually when my friend was burgled, they stuck a Hi-Lift jack[1] on the frame horizontally and cranked it until the frame came off. The police reckoned the door was open in under 20 seconds and their place was emptied of valuable stuff in

Actually I'd rather prefer someone to not invent the next Facebook. It reveals the human trait that despite best intentions, when shareholders get involved, cash is king regardless of the ethical stance the company supposedly takes.

a) Offline mode is unreliable. I know because I trialled it on a borrowed C720 last week. It's barely usable. Not only that you can't easily shift a document onto an SD for example in offline mode. Try it, then poke it in a PC and

This is not going to happen. Internet connectivity is a race to the bottom. Think of all the effort that has been put into delivering a fairly unreliable service over existing copper rather than implementing FTTP. Oh and then charging as mu

I'm glad they mention the HP Z420. The killer for me on the Z420: three-year Mon-Fri 8-5 next business day, parts, labor and 24x7 phone support, They come to me. Edit: to all the naysayers: I'm in the UK. HP here is pretty good.

That's fine until your Internet connection is down for 4 days and she's due an assignment that needs to be emailed or printed. The device is a lemon then. At least with a normal Mac/PC you can plug a printer in it.
