If what one is publishing is an algorithm or formula or what-have-you, it's only required that the algorithm itself be fully exposed. It particular implementation, much less so the implementation of the particular software that impleme

Definitely recommend it. Super readable (more so than Anonymous Pro), pleasing to the eye, and they took real care with the symbols that resemble each other (0O, 1l, etc). Also it has a bunch of different thickness levels, so for example wi

I was a big fan of inconsolata but I transitioned to Anonymous Pro, and then Source Code Pro, which I've been using for a good while now. The three of them make my top 3.

No forums for developing new languages? Seems like Go, Nimrod, Rust, D, CoffeeScript and many other relatively new languages have large and active development. That's interesting that they were booted from the shootout. I wonder what h

This looks really awesome! Thanks for bringing it to my attention. Why is this so much under the radar? It seems like it would have a ton going for it.

I might be off, but I think C still would have been popular. It's such a simple language, very easy to learn, easy to reason about, close to the machine but provides enough abstraction to easily write complicated code. C's merits

Unless someone had literally never seen anything on Haskell before, this kind of article adds absolutely nothing new to the discussion. It's all been said before, and more often than not it's been said by FP Complete. It reads lik

Haskell is really not much more strongly typed than Java, or even C++ (although it's much less liberal with letting you cast than either of those languages). Just like those languages, if a function has been declared to use types a, b

There are a few warts in javascript, but especially with "the good parts", it's really not that bad. Besides, it allows and encourages a lot of techniques which come from functional programming, which makes it a lot of fun fo

I think you mean semantics. Like nearly any imperative language, the code is structured as blocks of statements which are evaluated sequentially. This is semantics, and python and C are largely the same in this regard. However, syntacticall

Very cool stuff. I'm personally more interested in functional languages these days, but there's still a lot that imperative languages have to offer (duh). As a huge fan of C, I nonetheless am not a huge fan of its syntax, outside

Loops have their place: in imperative languages, they allow you to very naturally express a series of instructions, which are of course what imperative languages are meant to express in the first place. By the same token, loops aren't

I'm with you, but you do get used to it. Basically if you just get your feet wet writing a few semi-significant programs in Haskell (e.g. a parser, which is a very common and pleasant task in Haskell), then you'll get familiar wit

I used to believe in "self-documenting code," but it takes far longer to read through code than it does to read a comment on the code, and you're far more likely to come away with an intuitive and correct understanding, and w

I very much enjoy coding in Haskell, and would definitely say that it changes the way I think about code. In particular, it's taught me that strong static typing, no null references, and avoiding side-effects wherever possible are all

This is one of the annoying things about Haskell code -- since many Haskell programmers come from math backgrounds, they tend to use very short variables, often one letter or a letter and a number, where a programmer would use a descriptive

Having recently started doing python full-time, I would say that by far the biggest problem with python is its propensity to explode in your face. Code written in python seems so fragile; except for the most blatant bugs like syntax errors
