Great article. I seem to have no problem getting a program into my head, its getting it out that's the tough part. Its amazing how many times I've had to go somewhere else after work but end up driving the regular route home and get out o

Python is a great language to start, and even stay with. I've taught a few people to program in python. Very simple syntax, well supported, you'll love it and it will make a lot of sense. Start with python.org to download and learn.

I've been out here (the Valley) for the summer. The crazy thing about the place is, every time I ride the BART or sit down at a coffee shop there's someone sitting next to me that's either works at Yahoo/ebay/google/etc or is also doing a

I think your theory should be tested with capitalism. Your theory would only be correct if karma has no (or negligible) monetary value. Has anyone sold a news.YC account on ebay? I should give it a try. Could be interesting :)!

I think it was huge, but it totally depends on the person. If you're thinking you already know how to hack and can figure out business so college would be a waste then just don't do a comp sci major. I've been programming since i was 12.

The worst is http://www.google.com/transit . They released a beta that works for a small list of cities. Years later there is still no released progress and in my opinion its killed a lot of competitors. Its a great, though obvious id

We spent considerable time testing Django, Plone (not really a framework), PHP, and Cake PHP. We ended up going with django (Python). Really quick to learn. There's some documentation lacking once you get really deep and start doing some

http://www.grupl.com has the same functionality as reddit. It was started by my friend Zach and has now morphed into a facebook app. Its still small. If you post something there it will probably make the front page shortly.

Usually the problem is the other way around. You have an interesting scenario :). My suggestions: Start another. or Spend a year in Argentina reading and building a boat. This is my plan upon retiring (2.5 years to go!)

I've had a lot of interviews and never had to do a code critique. Microsoft's had me write some simple reverse strings type things but never critique code. It would think it would work great. Being able to turn some junk into something e

Great article! I'm starting this summer and if we don't get the Ycombinator gig we've got a tough decision to make about where to start. I'm currently of the opinion that we should live in my parents basement for the 3 months and not come
