This sounds a lot like trunk based development: feature flags, incremental changes, no long-lived feature branches. I think better tooling around git will help a lot with speeding up development teams.

At least there's Google takeout where you can download a data dump of everything they've stored for you, so probably a good idea to do that for your precious photo memories.
