Not caching your error pages is a good way to bring down your servers once something goes wrong. We usually have a short cache for errors to make sure there is an upper limit to the amount of requests coming through the cache.

Isn't that always the case with frameworks vs libraries? A database can be seen as a library but you build your entire game on top of the engine which makes it like a framework.

If you want multiplayer you're most likely better of with Unreal. Implementing multiplayer on Unity is possible but relatively tricky to get right. Other than that, it really depends on your team.

Yes, it's a large 3d game made in the Source Engine. Luckily all tools are scriptable using bash. Using svn for the game assets would work but to build them we would still need the shaders for example, which would live in the git repos
