Thank you! I skimmed over the abstract and will read the paper later, it seems interesting. But you gave me another point to support my view: PRESS uses stochastic gradient, not second-order method like IRLS.

I beg to disagree. [1] provides one with a whole-data-set training method (ADMM, one of such methods). Page 8 contains figure 2(b) - accuracy of training after specified amount of time. Note that ADMM start where stochastic gradient stops.

As a long time Haskell user (from 1998 - my career started at 1989) and professional Haskell programmer, I should say that Snoyman is quite responsible for what I do not like in Haskell infrastructure. At 1998, Haskell was a joy to play. At

"The good JIT" is a TCG at the time. Is it good for you? MIPS needs about 20 to 40 cycles for page fault handling. For 500MHz MIPS (Verilog/VHDL implementation synthesized to 90nm - yes, I am that old) it translates to late

Of course, hardware helps a lot. But I doubt that getting from typical 5%-10% of native performance to 70% (7-14 times speedup) can be attributed only to hardware assistance. MIPS is way too different from x86.

Peat fire is much like gunpowder fire, just much slower. Peat naturally accumulate nitrates (saltpeters among others) which are essential in the gunpowder burning process. As an evidence, I'd like to present a study that proves that pe

These blocks of 256 bytes most probably are stored in wear-leveling database of some sort hidden inside NVME. These databases are often LSM-tree-based. So, writing larger blocks still has benefits, especially when you use compression. If yo

The normal fat percentage range for men is 15..20%. 26% is overweight but not much. I once pulled up 27 times having 27-28% of fat being 38 years old, weighting 115 kg, which is about as much as I pulled up at my 18yo with 72 kg of body wei

C++ cannot have non-local type inference due to, you know, object-oriented part of it. This means that you cannot say something like this: auto sepulka; auto bubuka = zagizuka(sepulka); Because if zagizuka's parameter is a str
