Really? Wow, a lot to learn in this thread! Seems like we might not be very palatable for many creatures (or are just too bizarre for them to eat).

I like to think of it like gymnastics or performance art: it's "worth it" for its own sake, not to mention other benefits/consequences emanating from the arts. (I use "arts" liberally, in this context)

It was as if Detroit was hit by a perfect storm of boom-town, bust-town with all the sexy variables thrown in. What you described is a big part of it. And being mostly a one-industry town was another part, in an age of rapid globalization,

Re: the moving-in "trend" There's been an uptick of post-college types moving in the midtown area, and professionals in the downtown area -- but it's pretty much limited to those two areas, a tiny portion of the city as

My cousins live in London, Ontario, but spend maybe 1/2 of their time in the states, where their mother (my aunt) was born and raised. They cross the border all of the time. They love to joke about the Canadian attitudes towards their

For me, at least, there is something that repulses me about the idea of a service that encourages violation of deep partner trust. It seems the opposite of "open" to me. On the other hand, I can also understand the argument for ch

I've been scratching my head on this for quite a while as well. It seems to me that the value of the degree is going down, yet the price continues to rise. The self-education model (and ignoring the complexities of managing that ) i

Your advice reminds me of advice Al Franken has seemingly taken in his political career so he can break through his image of being a class-clown. A WaPo article I randomly dug up: http://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/

Hmmmm, possibly my slow-as-could-be hard drive. The SSD in my newer machine really does make a HUGE difference, to speak obviously ;) I have the feeling my old machine is using a bit of VRAM when WindowServer starts getting too heavy.

And way back in time, Apple had even factory-disabled my second NVIDIA card on my MBP because it had created heating issues in tests. So, I installed gfx, or something, to get it working. And then, predictably, major major heating issues. A

I did a fresh install from a seemingly healthy, semi-recent MBP and Yosemite's WindowServer seemed to begin a slow strangulation on my machine. Solved it by buying a top-of-the-line machine, which I'm sure Apple is loving.

I may have some dumb questions, here. But I'll stab at one or two anyhow of them, at the risk of looking even more dumb in this thread. Is there a possibility, or likelihood, that hard AI could diverge into at least two major dichotomi

Cool photos! Yeah, after flying over NYC, Chicago, San Fran, Detroit, etc. at night, NOTHING has come close to LA circuitry. Perhaps Las Vegas and Phoenix, on a smaller scale, but I haven't had a chance to view those cities personally.
