Very interesting list of links. This is such a good topic for popularization because of its visual and concrete aspects. (e.g. Papert and Turkle's idea of the "revaluation of the concrete" http://www.papert.org

But since Haskell of course compiles to C or C--, it obviously doesn't follow that you can't implement purity in an impure language -- just not at the level of the typical metacircular interpreter beloved of FP people. I'm

I think Dudley's attitude is regrettable. He uses the word "evil" in reference to the incorrect ideas they have, and the time and money wasted by mathematicians in replying to the cranks. He is more concerned with laughing at

This article would seem more generous if it sketched a proof of the impossibility (using field extensions). Since it was worth proving for the first time in the mid 19th C I don't think it's appropriate to make fun of mid 20th C f

Not normally distributed? Why would they be? For a "random" shuffle you would want a uniform distribution -- each permutation of the cards being equally likely. Can't think what bias could possibly consistently distort a rand

That distinction is very familiar to me. Forgeries are pastiches. Leaving behind the business of painting, a lot of art these days -- performance, conceptual --would be equally difficult (or easy) to forge because it communicates a particul

The "worthless" thing that's being protected is human life. The idea of sending exotic signals with dramatic structures was just a brainstorming exercise that gets a lot of publicity because it seems exciting. But there'

I don't know where you got the idea that quantifying something fixes it for all time. Numbers can change. Measures of inter-rater reliability can be applied to multiple ratings over time by the same person (why not?)

In fact, I think the data format ("sequence of bits") is actually something totally unrelated to the type system, which deals in an abstract idea of types. Type-checking doesn't get involved with encodings of values.
