I was forced to use Visual Studio in school, I hated it throughout and took every chance I could get to use Python or Ruby or something else with a unix-y stack. Trying it again now would be pretty far out of my way just to reaffirm what I

Try just being helpful to other people and not worrying about reputation points and badges and who's going to use the answer for what potentially commercial purpose. It can be pretty rewarding to have someone thank you profusely for helping

Yea, I really don't. What's wrong with different windows? I prefer to read documentation in a tool that is good for reading documentation (don't understand the IQueryable crap? Just jump over to StackOverflow in a couple keystrokes). The de

That doesn't sound all that good to me. My steps to finding what IQueryable provides: * Cmd+Tab to Chrome * Cmd+L for location focus * \IQueryable searches DuckDuckGo for IQueryable and takes me to first result I get to use the editor I wan

It may not be mentioned in the beginner docs... I feel ok insisting that professional software developers read more than an intro to the framework they are using. Also not mentioning it isn't the same as avoiding it 'at all costs'. To conti

On one hand you have `update_attributes` - IMO you should just never use this (seems raganwald agrees), but hey, it exists and it can be useful for simple stuff. So on the other hand is `attr_accessible` - You need to specify what is allowe

I disagree that node doesn't need more projects like this. And I disagree that express/geddy/etc are 'modeled after rails/django'. But, a framework that spans client/server could be really interesting. Have you seen Derby? http://derbyjs.c

So, with something like Tower.js the code is written in coffee to start with ( https://github.com/viatropos/tower/tree/master/src ), but in the repo (and in npm) you'll actually get the resulting JavaScript as well ( https://github.com/viat

Honestly, contrary to this article, I think you'd find that most developers using Macs use them more for the OS than for the hardware. If I could build a seriously beefy desktop machine and run OSX properly on it, I would. For laptops the n

Apple pays fair market value for the labor (that would be China's market), ships the result across the ocean/vast distances, and then sells it at fair market value elsewhere. Also, as per the article, 'low income' is relative. Low to you, h

How about the fact that zsh enforces that you spend a certain amount of time per day just contemplating your existence: % time zsh -c exit zsh -c exit 0.22s user 0.21s system 97% cpu 0.436 total $ time bash -c exit bash -

Of course they aren't advocating that. They're just saying you can try it out by dropping that script tag on your page. Their first suggestion, and the one they are definitely implicitly recommending, is: "Use it as a part of your asset pac

I started working on a bug tracker (who hasn't at some point, right? :)) because we were using Bugzilla at work and I absolutely hated it and didn't think it fit with our workflow at all. About a year later I brought it to the team and we d

Great point. Also imagine the space you save by not having a user serviceable battery compartment. No latches and contacts in a little plastic housing and walls to separate the battery from the rest of the device. You can make it any shape

The point is that we all did pay for good tools. We paid for TM1, and TM1 included the promise of a free update to TM2. I already own TM2, see?

That is an... interesting approach. I, for one, who would gladly pay for TM2 separately had I not already purchased a license for it , would not appreciate that kind of attitude and make sure never to do business with Macromates again.

How can you not understand that $60 is huge money to some people? It doesn't matter the price, it's expensive to someone. He made a promise about what that $60 buys you (namely, TM1 and TM2), so he better deliver.

It has nothing to do with being a 'cheapskate'. It also has nothing to do with the amount. Next to the 'buy' button in 2005 there was text along the lines of "upgrades are free all the way to 2.0". Changing that now, added to the fact that
