In fact, it turned out that Darth Vader was Lukes father. Contextual fictional facts are really common in language. I remember doing it in philosophy first year. It conundrum-y philosophically, but usually understood effortlessly in normal

People are responding to you saying that it doesn't retain the yin-yang shape, but I've been watching for a while on 64x speed, and the yin-yang shape is one it repeatedly returns to. I'm not even a dimwitted individual with

I don't think that's a good way of stating it. You get the posts from the people anyone on your server follows. An admin can block or silence accounts, or run a relay, but these are edge cases.

Interestingly, in the Apple App Store, there is no option to filter by "paid". Only free. I want an option to filter by "paid, no IAP". Actually, I don't mind IAp for things like new levels and such. It's just

Free? How are the servers going to run? Syncthing is probably the closest bet. It doesn’t require servers, so it can be free. But it isn’t really a full Dropbox replacement.

I find it pretty mysterious, and am starting to think it's distributed bike-shedding. I'd wager most notes, if they are ever taken, are write-only. Seems like a distraction to me.

Evolution is not operating at the speed necessary on population to the change of circumstances we have generated over the last 15,000 years. Especially in the modern world, where it is hardly clear that the reproduction rates of the people

Because I usually don’t want to talk to computers in front of other people? It isn’t that it feels silly, but that it’s incredibly distracting for everyone to hear every interaction you have with a computer. This is true even at home. Maybe

> If I am factually correct, by definition, everyone who disagrees with me is irrational and can't be reasoned with. No, that doesn’t follow at all. Your arguments could be bad or irrational in themselves (right for the wrong reason

I don’t think you’re right about that. LLMs are very good for exploring half-formed ideas, (what materials could I look at for x project?), generating small amounts of code when it’s not your main job, and writing boring crap like grant app

I have a very similar frustration with the complexity here, and found that scrolling tiled window managers (like PaperWM, Niri, etc.) might actually be the answer. All your windows are in a line, press the shortcut until you hit focus the o

That always struck me as pretty overblown, given that before map apps, people got lost all the goddam time. It was a rare trip with any complexity that a human map reader wouldn’t make a mistake or two. LLMs aren’t competing with perfect, t

There’s plenty of replacements which are fine. Many are better to use for many tasks. The problem is lock-in in professional contexts. Having a problem with some feature in a PSD? “I don’t wanna pay for Photoshop” isn’t usually an acceptabl

Interestingly, vertebrate palaeontology switched to clade-based taxonomy a while ago (although genus and species cling on). Wikipedia tries to attach ranks to the clades of extinct animals such as dinosaurs, which have no basis in the scien

Practically all painting or drawing includes some sort of symbolism. Sometimes it’s so obvious that we don’t recognise it as symbolism (picture of cow = cow), but other things aren’t (spiral = ?). The Wikipedia article on Rock Art contains

Pre MacOS X did indeed crash all the time. I learned to only use one application at a time. It would still crash a couple of times a day, requiring a restart. On the other hand it was snappy and simple, in a way modern OSs just aren’t.

Or will it be like self-driving cars? Early gains, but then a long plateau? AI is just not at the stage where outfits like the WP should be "pivoting" to it (whatever that means). I suspect it just means producing more "conte
