Why is the EU going after Google if Ireland is the one that broke an agreement? Usually we go after the entity that did something wrong.

If we were overpaid, companies with a large portion of developers would all go out of business. But they're not. Where is the money above the value we create coming from?

Interviewing _is_ a filter. Each step where you eliminate candidates is a filter; that's what that word means. I think what you're really trying to say is that blind filtering is bad (okay, you said this part explicitly) and you

The only two alternatives to not filtering candidates are to hire every candidate or not hire anyone. How could these possibly be better?

OS X used to have a "Network Link Conditioner" that shipped with XCode, I believe. It did a lot of the things you're suggesting, but right at the network interface level. Unfortunately, it broke with the advent of Mavericks

Why should you compare using your overall rate in retirement? Is there some assumption here that most or all of your retirement income is coming from tax-advantaged accounts? That's probably the wrong calculation to make for high earne

Falsely claiming that a company committed a crime might run afoul of libel laws? That's the only thing I can think of.

I think it's important to take the bigger picture into account here. Letting us know who she is was a key part of that comment, since it's immediately relevant to the content.

I don't think you understand credit scores if you think that's minimal. Having even one card is an enormous boost. And four years of history is not bad either. I graduated college with no credit history and couldn't get a non

The entire point of the article in question is that startup employees make less on average, so forgive me if I'm a bit skeptical of your claim that the startup job will pay on average a full order of magnitude more.

Interesting; I've never had to think about how regex interact with Unicode. I guess what I really meant is that programmers are talking about PCRE in terms of power, not in terms of exact syntax. In particular, they have recursive pat

It is true that regular expressions in the CS sense can't parse context-free grammars. However, PCRE, which is what most programmers are talking about when they say "regex", can do so. So you're both kinda right, I gue

So the suggestion is that in 1994 (when the https protocol was introduced) we should have put big scary warnings on every non-ssl site? I don't see how that could've gone well. It's now 22 years later and people still aren&

I don't think base salary is a very good measure of compensation at places like Google. Are you suggesting that RSUs and bonuses be valued at $0?

A large portion of the high wages are coming out of sustainable companies, so I don't think you can blame this on startups. Netflix, Google, Microsoft, Amazon, etc. are all outpaying Canada's tech sector by huge margins yet someh

Excellent. I'm glad we agree. You'll notice that the stated identity f(x,x) = x fails to hold over x < 0. I hope this is sufficient to make it clear that the equation does not consider the negatives?

The given function is clearly only defined over naturals. In the first part using bits, there's no indication of how to encode negatives, and in the second part with the sum equation, f(-1,-1) >= 0 (and thus not equal to -1) for any

While I usually appreciate this kind of talk, it's irrelevant here. How much a theoretical developer could make has no bearing on the median developer salary right now, which is solidly below 118k.
