I’ve been getting into home automation recently and I’ve given myself a rule: nothing cloud connected. If I can’t run it off my local server, I don’t want it. I have much more motivation to secure my home than any company ever will.

The requests still have to go to Apple. The only way to verify if they’re logged or not would be to examine the servers themselves and the software running on them.

Ok, I exaggerated a little. But only $31m is earmarked for cash payments so they only get hurt by the first 248,000 people who submit claims.

This argument doesn't work when you consider that the payout isn't $125 per person, it's "a small percentage of $700m divided by the number of claimants (capped at $125)" per person[1]. Equifax doesn't get hurt

Which is totally fair, I get that. It’s kind of my point: anything financially out of the ordinary, plus the massive (to them) red flag of no credit history, would be a very difficult obstacle to overcome in getting a loan.

And for the phone number part, “If Bluetooth is ON on your Apple device AND you’re trying to Airdrop something (which you’d expect to send some identifying information) or connect to a new WiFi network (same)...” To be fair I wouldn’t neces

I wonder. When I bought my first house it was a very simple process because my finances were very simple. For the second, which I’m still in the process of finalizing, it’s been an absolute nightmare. Both my wife and I have credit scores a

This is what I use. I'm not quick with arithmetic in my head so if I want anything more accurate it's faster to just grab my phone.

Due to a design flaw, the raspberry pi 4 won't receive power if you connect it to a USB-C cable that supports advanced features. If you use the official charger (or most USB-C chargers that come with their own cable, I'm guessing)

One reason why I love my NUC. I have it running everything under the sun and it plus my networking gear draws 18 W. To be fair I haven't checked when it's under heavy load, but the internet says it shouldn't be more than arou

I'm using a NUC rather than a Pi for Plex, but I avoid transcoding on the server by just transcoding everything up front. Nearly every client these days can play H.264 natively.

The ESP8266 is a fantastic platform and Adafruit has some great breakout boards for it. I’ve heard good things about its successor the ESP32 as well.

Some months ago I transferred some money between two accounts at different banks. The money arrived _twice_ in two different accounts of mine at the destination bank. I contacted them and asked them to cancel the second transfer, but they j

My organization has used them for years as wall terminals for our time clock system. Recently though many of them have started suffering from swelling batteries so we're swapping them out for custom-built units.

So does simply using a different DNS server than the network supplies, unless you’re blocking port 53.

One of my hobbies is fixing broken phones / tablets. Many times people have told me I could make decent money if I charged more for my services. That’s probably true, but I don’t want to. I ask cost of parts + $5-10 to afford new too

When I switched from macOS to linux, the things I missed the most were AirDrop and being able to text from my computer. I'll admit I still haven't found substitutes for either that are nearly as nice.

I felt this effect for the first time when I was living in Israel for a few months. I couldn't rest my wrists on my MBA while it was plugged in because of how painful it was. People said the power was "dirtier" over there tha

I drive a manual. I couldn't say whether it's made me a safer driver, but I do believe it's given me a much greater awareness of my speed at all times (for shifting to the correct gear).
