I have a fence that gets absolutely blasted with High Grade Texas Sunlight. It shortens the fence’s effective life by years — this idea is brilliant . Now I just gotta price out 80 sq m of solar panels. EDIT: The fence gets at least 4 ho

A lot of people really kick back on sortition. I think a good compromise is this: everyone votes like normal. We then take the top K candidates who got more than some fraction of the votes. (Say: greater than 1/9th of the total votes.)

Convincing Mrs. thechao that we needed to drop 80000$ on a blown V8 to build a 4b 3 function calculator didn't workout, BTW.

Spur gear differentials are naturally adders (with carry!); so, traditionally they've only ever been used for analogue logic. They're overly complicated for digital logic: you need two spur gears to build a single gate (NAND) to p

I've always wanted to build (distinct) mechanical computers out of the following kinds of elements: 1. Spur-gear differential; and, 2. Shishi-odoshi. Both of these are saturating mechanical devices that can be used to build NAND gates;

Millions of rows in minutes sounds not ok, unless your tables have a large number of columns. A good rule is that SQLite's insertion performance should be at least 1% of sustained max write bandwidth of your disk; preferably 5%, or mor

The MAGA ideologues can stay cultists longer than we can stay solvent? I'm in Texas, and I've got a neighbor, down the road, who was in custom home construction; he's out of business now. Why? He can't import lumber, r

I see these sorts of statements from coders who, you know, aren't good programmers in the first place. Here's the secret that I that I think LLM's are uncovering: I think there's a lot of really shoddy coders out there

I’ve been in the get-out-the-vote space for 25 years, now. I’ve been politically active against gerrymandering nearly as long. My wife was tooth-and-nails in the redistricting fight (in Texas; Texas!) for ~10 years. Here’s my hands-on exper

Austin? I thought my house was outrageously overpriced in 2014 when I bought it — compared to every other major city in Texas it was 2x/ft. It's tripled in "value" since then; new builds are quadruple. The rest of Texas

I have poor color discrimination, but excellent flicker detection (?). This last skill was discovered by the senior devs when I was doing GPU driver debug, and “we” were looking for an extremely transient high-refresh rate tile clear issue.

My PhD, and its chapters are junk. Just read Griewank; I don't have anything more to say than his monograph. (We could never generalize the AD operator to the hybrid mode, so it's useless for real workloads.)

My PhD dissertation included a chapter (originally from a 2006 paper) on generic programming in CAS' on the algorithmic differentiable ring (and operator). By the 1990s, algorithmic differentiation was easily 30–40 years old. Griewank

When I was studying economics, my macro professor used to belabor the point that post-WW2 US socioeconomics was a highly unique (and special) time-and-place; and, it is a mistake to generalize economic theory from that time-and-place. So...
