Off topic: I've always been surprised by LinkedIn's success, though it seems that's a problem with my perception as a freelance web developer. I can see their value to those looking for salaried jobs, but I'd be interested to hear if/how pe

I had found Andy Rutledge's archive ( http://www.andyrutledge.com/ ) to be a really great introduction to design. The 'Practice' section in his archive has some really great introductions, especially his articles on perception. This one is

Using perceived speed as a goal, I can load the most prominent and interesting aspects of a page first. Ads and whatnot can show up 1s later. So even before IE says "done" users can be gratified and interacting with my site.

For a company that seems to have so many internal problems, the tools Yahoo gives away are really fantastic. YUI, PageSpeed, Pipes... all great stuff.

Why are you surprised that a $25/hour designer uses templates and tables? Are you expecting someone who keeps current in, or takes pride in, their craft for that rate? This seems like a pretty dubious experiment.

Have you looked into IE 9? Everything I've seen leads me to believe that Microsoft has finally started listening. All that loss of market share has finally had the right effect.

While I'm not aware of anything it certainly stands to reason that they would, especially with their DoubleClick network. If the EFF with their limited resources figured this out, Google likely would have, too.

FWIW I've been quite pleased with PayPal, both standard and "pro." They get a bad rap (somewhat deserved), but for ease of setup and low barriers to entry, they're the best I've found. For one customer (a music festival) I set up paypal in

Surprised at the order of their web font fallbacks: "Arial, Helvetica" or "Verdana, Arial, Helvetica" Verdana has much less in common with Helvetica than Arial does. It's also rare to see a designer spec Arial before Helv.

Not trying to doubt you, but was it really just a one word post that elicited that reaction? Did the message come from Facebook or someone else? Is this a common occurrence? That level of censorship boggles the mind...
