A lot. My parents and I recently bought my 93 yo Grandfather an iPad, and even though he's smart and has owned a desktop mac for 15 years he still struggles with things like email and photos on the iPad. Senior-oriented features/u

That sounds probably stupid, and like a tremendous amount of fun.

Indeed. But doing quality "break a nail" type work for a month, and then sending a big invoice at the end that gets paid without argument, feels so good you'll want to do it again.

I'm skeptical because it sounds too good to be true. How can this be a free service?

Habari, American new to TZ (but not E. Africa) here. Is there much of a tech community around? I stopped by Kinu and Buni. Both seem nice but sparse...

Markup aside, the projects take different approaches: Bootstrap is polished, opinionated defaults that can be overridden, and Pure is a minimal base to extend.

After 3 projects in a row on Bootstrap I started using Pure about a month ago, and like the clean, un-opinionated approach. It's been especially useful for learning more about SASS and responsive layout without having to override a bun

I've thought about something similar but get hung up on data entry. How do you make it not miserable to get food purchase data into the app, given that food doesn't have an RFID tag in it, and not everything (produce) has a barcod

This kind of two-pane layout looks great on large screens but is unusable on mobile (my Nexus 5, at least). Are there any good approaches that don't involve making a separate mobile layout? Maybe a mobile-only button to expand the side

This post is confusing to me and a little scary. The linked resume is far more extensive than mine, and I often turn away inquiries for reasonably well-paid freelance web app development because I don't have the bandwidth. What happens

Seriously. I like the focus on practical productivity but was surprised by the conclusion. "Let's all change from saying agile to saying agility" feels like quibbling over semantics. (Fixed spelling, thanks)

I was in a similar situation recently working with minimally funded organizations. In the end, after spending about two years on it, I wasn't able to make it work. The groups' needs were just different enough that they required co

Looks like Chrome for Android is crashing because the serialized png is too large. Just sent a quick pull request that exports a smaller jpg instead.

I don't know why I find doge so funny, but this is great. Unfortunately "very view" causes Chrome and Chrome Beta to crash on a Nexus 5/Android 4.4.2. I get the idea though. What does the tech stack look like? Is it open

What does 'rot your mind' mean in this context? I agree, and intuitively feel there's value in avoiding short term distractions, but what's going on there? Is it just opportunity cost, spending time watching TV instead o

+1 for the "worst/most challenging thing about working here". I saw it suggested on HN a few months ago and tried it once in an interview and once in casual conversation. At first I was concerned about offending the interview

Check out Sanergy. They're collecting human waste using custom toilets in Nairobi slums, and selling fertilizer and electricity. http://saner.gy

I'm all for people learning to program so they can build something they're excited about, but this seems disingenuous. For most people it'll take months or more to go from zero coding experience to building an MVP of their 'killer app' idea

Thanks for this. I am also a semi-technical founder, but I've learned enough HTML/CSS/JS and Python to get an MVP online by myself. I did this because because I had almost no resources when I started out, enjoy programming and wanted to get
