I'm building course notes right now for a college class using markdown & MathML/LaTeX, that i'll be hosting on Github pages for the students to browse. It's by far the best balance that I've come across yet.

I could have sworn that Continuum had gov't funding for numpy development, but maybe that was just for Blaze?

The output looks like transcripts of some of the poorer TEDx talks that I've watched. Excellent job.

You and me both, but there was a time when I would have been perfectly fine with this, because I lived it. Well, it was the military, and you'd have to replace "hack away" with "non-stop exercise and dumb chores", b

It rings true to me. I have a math PhD, and taught at various levels. Something I can say is that while I'm not sure that everyone is capable of groking advanced math, a person who can do that could actually come from anywhere, at leas

It wasn't clear to me either. Demonstrated "supremacy" over conventional general-purpose CPUs, as described in the article, does certainly read like hyperbole.

Out of curiosity, what was the motivation for switching from Python to R for analysis, was there a particular R package that you were looking to use?

I'll give this a shot, I like the idea of editing a file within a separate tab of the web interface. Anything to help refactor things into and from file and the notebook is nice.

I guess I could see that. Maybe I need to learn more of the keyboard shortcuts and magic methods.

I really like Jupyter, but somehow I'm not in love with it. Like, every time I fire it up to use it for quick data analysis, I seem to inevitably end up back in sublime + bash, sending plots to disk. Am I the odd one out?

Firing pins are pretty easy to swap out, though. Easy enough that this could be used to tamper with evidence or even frame someone. It doesn't really seem like a great idea.

It does seem strange that you have to typically "pay your dues" with 4-ish semesters of calculus (calc i, ii, ii, diffy-q, and maybe pre-calc) before you take anything else. It's very strange as a gate-keeper to the subject.

I teach college occasionally, and definitely agree. It is a conveyer belt from freshman to senior, and those students who have not thought beyond their coursework may be in for a rude surprise post-graduation.

Thanks for sharing. I'm putting together materials for a course on data structures that I'm teaching this fall. I have the theory part covered, but I'm always on the lookout for things that could make for decent practical ass

I'm not sure what their release process looks like, but the Github for supervisor seems reasonably active: https://github.com/Supervisor/supervisor Sadly it doesn't seem to play well when run under Python 3.

How does something become an official project under the umbrella of GNU, other than adopting a GPL? I'm guessing the FSF somehow curates and leads the individual efforts, before it can be called "GNU $THING"?

Yep, my 2012 Civic was bought on 1% financing. Paid off now, still runs great, and I kept the would-be total payment in cash in retirement accounts. Probably could have done better on a used car, but for once I wanted to be the one to run s

I agree, it does get old fairly quickly. I also don't think cellular automata has made the giant "new kind of science" impact that he proposed that it would.

Getting your hands dirty is definitely a good thing, but CodeAcademy is a bit dry. The best thing I've found is trying to get someone to make something that THEY want or need. For someone 100% new to programming, that can be a bit toug

It's an issue here on the outskirts of Cleveland as well. I wouldn't call it a blight per se, but I'm not sure why Ohio in particular is suffering this in greater amounts than other areas.

Is this an alternative to the cpython interpreter, or is it just a bundle with numpy-backed MKL? Not that it wouldn't be handy, but anaconda python does provide this too.

git + markdown could be an interesting combo for back and forth written revisions (we do it at work with latex and git for research papers). But to someone outside of the tech community, it looks 100% alien of a workflow.

The congressional politics of the districts where the development of human space flight systems are a major employer are, unfortunately, a huge factor in NASA's budget earmarks. Also known as the "Alabama Space Mafia".
