This definitely concerns me as a dad. I need to keep discipline not just for myself, but to set the right example.

Same! It came free with my dad's 386 that he bought for work back in 1991 or 1992. He didn't have any interest in it so I read through the manual and tinkered with it.

I've taught some undergrad courses, and unfortunately in practice this is a bit of an upstream problem. The pace of main line non-remedial courses is often set by the scope of course objectives, which in many cases are tied to accredit

This was something I had to find out the hard way in the process of writing this https://github.com/thearn/webcam-pulse-detector Without interpolative resampling, it didn't work well for me at all.

I have a PhD in mathematics, and have been working in the public sector (NASA) for a little under 10 years. A mix of interest in numerical linear algebra and software engineering helped me work into a niche in scientific computing and engin

I've started a habit of sitting down with my son and taking them apart, screw by screw, piece by piece. He loves tools so he's into it 100%. The louder, brighter, and more annoying the y are, the more likely that they don't m

I added z-wave switches to my house, but honestly they function enough like normal switches that I would just leave them if I sold the house (but take the controller with me). I never used any cloud services though.

Awesome, pretty handy to have for engineering/scientific computing code. Over time, you do start to build the intuition just like you do for scalar derivative calculations, but it takes time.

Agreed, many congrats due to the Scipy team! Their library was one of several that helped me get away from MATLAB post graduate school.

Side note: It's interesting that you're getting a masters after your phd. Is it in a pretty different field?

I've worked on a few teams at my job that only seemed to hire from GA Tech, MIT or Purdue (engineering), though I was the odd one out in coming from a non-engineering background (math) from a state school. Intellectual inbreeding is a

I've been trying to cut sugar out of my diet recently. Eventually I'd like to at least feel comfortable treating it like alcohol: only for consumption in social settings and not too often.

I wonder, is BTC liquid enough that you could actually get your $600k if you suddenly were able to recover them? I haven't dabbled in crypto coins, so I have no idea how the exchanges really operate in practice.

FFT is a pretty cool thing. But yeah, this "trick" has been used for correlation-based computations for quite awhile. Assuming that it's the trick that the author was referring to, the article is actually a bit sparse on deta
