Great little boards, I use these as mini portable file servers/Git hosts in my lab.

No kidding. You could replace "DOS" with "______", then fill in any software project, and it would sound pretty spot on.

I think that awarding contracts to the lowest bidder is a recipe for disaster if it is a software product being ordered.

Another cool thing is that orthonormal bases are not unique - there are many other basis functions that you can choose beyond just sine and cosine to decompose a function (or digital signal). Though they are a natural choice if you are spec

Love git, but am also glad to see that changes are being considered to make its behavior more intuitive. Relevant: http://stevelosh.com/blog/2013/04/git-koans/

Another angle: the PCA is given by computing the SVD (a more general analog of eigenvalue/eigenvector decomposition) of a whitened representation of the data. Some idiosyncrasies of PCA them become obvious: we can't determine if

Pretty good advice, much of it not exclusive to CS alone. In particular the notes about the opportunity cost involved with getting a PhD. I'd add to this: find out with absolute clarity upfront what the terms are for applying as a doct

I like the idea. Though in my field (mathematics), I think this is actually not at all uncommon already (reviewing and sanity checking unpublished work of your adviser and their colleagues). Then again, we have the benefit of being able to

Someone should make an app that aggregates a list of companies that pay for advertisements which are especially disruptive or annoying, so I can be extra sure that I'm not supporting their behavior.

My students this summer used python/numpy/scipy with spyder in place of MATLAB. I was pretty impressed with it overall.

A good way to get folks to make the switch. I just wish Python 3 didn't benchmark so much slower than Python 2 in some of my use cases (though I still aim for compatibility with it). Couple of relevant search results: http://

Good to hear. The situation with python packaging has seemed kind of chaotic for awhile. The setuptools/distribute merger will hopefully standardize things from here on out.

Good comment, and much of it also applies to vague optimism that some people put into Machine Learning methods.

Both. The higher order cubes aren't as hard as they might seem. Most strategies degenerate towards knowing how to solve the 3x3x3 case.

I know Morley Davidson, one of the mathematicians who worked this out. Well, I took seminars with him while working on my PhD at least. His office is full of puzzle cubes. Now that I've got my own office, so is mine. They're kind

Easiest way is to get partners (or at least followers) on a project, if you can. It definitely helps motivate me to keep working on things after the initial drive wears down.
