As much as I love using Python for my day job, this is one place where it really doesn't fit. Learning OS development is actually a great reason to practice C.

OpenMDAO is very much an option, though it is geared more for model-based analysis and numerical optimization for highly integrated systems. The primary use case is to assist in early conceptual design, particularly for vehicles. But basica

Just a note: systems engineering at NASA has it's own internal definition that is closer to a management role than a technical one. Source: am NASA engineer.

It is a pretty good comparison - I implemented a fast GOL code in Python using FFT-based kernel convolution a few years back https://github.com/thearn/game-of-life

First time parent of a 1 year old, and while we're just getting started this is pretty much my perspective already. I can already see how time flies so quickly, too quickly to hyper-analyze and optimally re-assess our every interaction

I do a moderate amount of travelling for my job (in the federal gov't), and DC is one place that I find very, very hard to make things like meals fit within the prescribed allowance. Bay Area? no problem eating on the cheap, even right

Part of me really wonders why, considering all of the controversies with the Olympics and IOC over the years, why we haven't seen an alternative multi-category world athletic competition gain some support. Though I do understand it wou

Simpler than many I expect to see listed here, but I'm a pretty big fan of Dominion. If the cards are always picked randomly, each play of the game is very different.

Great series as always, though I have to say I feel like it felt somewhat rushed at the end. i suspect that he did not want to do another 5-hour last part, like his series on the roman republic ended up having.

That actually raises an interesting question, what are dimensional lumber measurements like in metric? Or do countries that use the SI system generally not use wood for framing?

We've already seen metric creep in a little bit: I'd imagine pretty much every American out there can conceptualize what 2 liters looks like. edit: in addition, military servicemembers should all have a good practical feel for 1km

I'm a math/software guy at NASA. I work 80 hours every two weeks, with flexible scheduling. A lot of folks will work over 8 hours a day to get one or two extra days off every pay period. Others (like me) tend to opt for a more tra

Good read, I've been meaning to make more time for reading up on the state of biased-but-low-variance estimation.

Though I'm not a stats researcher, that sounds very similar to the Cramer Rao bound (a lower limit on the variance of any unbiased estimator, something akin to the Cauchy-Schwartz inequality only for point estimation).

It honestly isn't too much more complex than that. The conventional framework for the test of hypotheses (via the neyman-pearson lemma or some slight twist on it) effectively says you should put a hard limit on the dangerous type I err

I've noticed this too with a lot of games - nostalgia filters are a real thing. The original Deus Ex is a good example. The story is amazing, but pretty much everything else has aged like milk.

Speaking from experience, the biggest problem with NASA's software engineering requirements ( http://nodis3.gsfc.nasa.gov/displayDir.cfm?t=NPR&c=7150&s=2B ) is the way that they tend to feed down into non-safety

I was an artilleryman is the U.S. Army. We get the machine gun fired over us in a trench during basic training (like everyone else), but that sounds like so much more profound of an experience. I kind of wish we did that here. That said, I
