Imho it’s awesome to learn. I don’t personally like crypto, but the idea of a blockchain is somewhat genius. Satoshi’s paper https://bitcoin.org/bitcoin.pdf is _very_ easy to read.

QR iteration (which uses QR decomposition) truly is a remarkable and beautiful algorithm. It was even coined one of the top 10 algorithm of the 20th century https://archive.siam.org/pdf/news/637.pdf

Higham is an outstanding researcher. One book I really enjoyed from him is https://epubs.siam.org/doi/book/10.1137/1.9780898717778 . He has many many other excellent ones.

I might be wrong about the exact historical reason. But the way I see it "spectral decomposition of A" is a way to express A as a sum of orthogonal, rank-1, operators. A = \sum l_i u_i u_i^T. Those l_i are the eigenvalues; u_i ar

But LU, when it works, is less flops (only half though, IIRC). And doesn't require a square-root. I think that's why it used to be preferred when compute was a very scarce resource. Clearly that's not really the case anymore

It can't always be computed accurately; I suspect that's why it's not mentioned. Bunch–Kaufman is the "right" factorization for indefinite Hermitian/symmetric matrices but it's not as well know.

Well, yeah, I use it in the context of floating-points-operations-per-seconds. That's the most common use in my field. I was replying to the parent comment. No need to use this kind of tone.

I heard something very similar from some of his very close (ex-)colleagues, so it appears to be true :)

It's always been very ambiguous in practice. To avoid ambiguity I usually use `flop/s` but not everyone likes that :)

Just because no one cares does not mean it's allowed. Try going through the US border on a B1 (tourist) VISA (or visa-exempt) and mentioning that you're staying 90 days to work for your <other country> company. I doubt that

Well that particular NASA code is from the 90’s and in Fortran. Maybe with MPI. That’s probably part of the reason why.

I have a "MacBook Pro (13-inch, M1, 2020)" and I clearly can't have 2 external monitors. I tried everything.

Given that it's not a new mechanism and the amount of money involved, I assume if it wasn't legal this would have been sued into oblivion already.

Same. If I own 10% of a company, how can the board just decide through some mechanism that I now really own like 8% ?

Math for the sake of math can be very self fulfilling. Like an intellectual hobby (it just takes a lot of work and energy).

One has shape (N, 1) and one has shape (N). Always having a trailing 1 is a pain in many settings. Matlab has that “trailing 1” all the time and it’s a PITA.

DOB is often just to make sure they have the right person, and not an alias. But yeah, SSN, I wouldn't give it out like this.

FDIC protects against bank failures (like the bank goes bankrupts and looses all the deposited money). It has nothing to do with unauthorized transactions as far as I know.

Same experience. Beefy machine, takes 45 minutes to compile cmake using a ppc64le container on an x86_64 host.

Don’t transactions (should) show up in your online account pretty much instant? I thought they did for me. I also hate fastrack and the “fast lanes”. Only good thing is they send you the transponder pretty much for free :)
