Programming is craftsmanship. At scale and with long-term projects it requires knowledge, mastery of tools, foresight, experience, intuition, creativity, planning and many judgement calls. This is not special. The same is true for many othe

In general I agree, but I also have a counter point. I enjoy the European shows on Amazon and Netflix, much more so than the tiring Hollywood garbage. Netflix does bring a decent budget for more Hollywood competitive production value to sho

No increase over Q4 2020. Has Tesla stated a production goal for 2021? It should be noted that the S/X production lines have been partially offline in Q1 while refitting for the model refresh. I also wonder if Tesla is impacted by the

But systemd service definitions are just as easy to copy and customise. Easier, actually, because they follow a convention and you don't have to be paranoid about screwing up a fiddly bash script.

Can anyone recommend some quality, somewhat neutral books that analyze the economical, political and military developments over the last and future decades? We are obviously seeing shifts in the global economy and power balance, with the US

The article doesn't mention at all how those speedups have been achieved, what tradeoff the format makes and what it is optimized for - which would be the actually interesting part. A link to the benchmark code and description of the d

I don't see the connection. As I said, many companies require a review/sign off for each dependency (version). Since they usually can't get them externally, they have do it internally. Enterprises also throw a lot of money at

Tangentially related: Many companies have auditing requirements for external dependencies, with increasing strictness for more sensitive domains. It would be immensely helpful to distribute this effort. We could have a platform that pays to

The problem is that people still need something to do that gives some meaning to their existence and provides accomplishment, intrinsically and within their peer group. There are only so many occupations that can do that. There's art,

rqlite is a separate daemon written in Go, negating most of the reasons to choose Sqlite in the first place. It absolutely has good use cases, but those are rather niche. You'll mostly be better off with the traditional postgres etc.

As mentioned by others, they haven't requested approval, and are currently 30 million doses short of their first quarter obligations. Which makes the number found here really curios.

This post is really embarrassing, I would just take it down. And you should really institute a review process. There is no such thing as "unfiltered" blog posts on an official domain. It reflects badly on the company.

I'm not sure how a blog post like this made it past any kind of review/quality control/PR in a 1000+ employee company. Criticising other services is quite poor form already. But then the criticism is a shallow dismissal by so

In the new Reddit settings you can disable new Reddit, which will make the regular domain use old Reddit. No broken links and much better experience.

You can group languages in different ways. VM vs native is one way, but you can also go by the level of abstraction they provide, which very much puts them in the same category. Also, this debate comes up every time, but ARC is widely class

Crystal has a GC. I see it as more similar to the likes of Nim, Swift, Java or C#. It's a great language regardless.

I totally agree that Rust isn't the right language for every domain. But especially in all those domains where memory safety is an issue , in my view it is currently the best option. Rust forces you to think about memory safet and owne

Considering that Rust exists, I really don't hope that Zig gets much adoption, at least until the language improves a lot in some key aspects. There definitely is a design space for a simpler language than Rust that is easier to write,

Zig has a nullable pointer type, which will have null checks. But only in ReleaseSafe build mode, and it's trivial to construct a non nullable pointer that is null or uninitialised. So I agree with your disagreement.

Agreed. But many developers might be very much against littering code with such tour comments, and be very much opposed to any kind of responsibility of updating tours during refactoring. Me included.

A killer feature would be doing semantic analysis to attach steps to AST nodes instead of lines. EG a class or function. Without this it seems tours could be broken/outdated very quickly in active code bases. Do you have any plans for

Agreed, managing secure servers is a full time job. The situation with Bitwarden is a bit different though. Secrets are encrypted on the clients, the server never sees decrypted data.

I love actors, but baking them into the language like this seems like the wrong approach to me. The language should provide all the necessary abstractions to create an isolated context. Actors can then "just" be a default abstract

Why don't you just get a dedicated "virtual" phone number for this purpose? It's not expensive. Skype is an obvious choice, but there are many other providers. Then you have a stable number and can read SMS via app web U
