    This is the same pattern Twitter uses today. If you are on a tweet anonymously it shows login page after x seconds. Basically, they are interested to know “who” is doing “what”.

    I entered an address. It said $14K savings for 20 years. It takes $15K to install solar roof. So break even is like 20 years - which is half the productive life time. It doesn't motivate me to install Solar panels.

    I think it is not just readers of HN. Do search engines read urls (unlinked ones) to build their index? Cause then it will be very easy for spammers to post links & take advantage of HN's high rating.
