Yeah I agree with the 2006 Hinton paper. I read it and reread it and didn't get it. I didn't have the math background at the time and it inspired me to get it. And here I am almost 20 years later working on it.

I would agree.. But it took Computer Scientists to put neural networks on the map by getting them to scale. Basically by asking the question what happens if we turn it up to 11. Statisticians would never have done that due to parsimony

Well the reason is that nobody knows what society needs… or stated differently, what ends up being useful is non-obvious. So you can’t plan it outside of some general parameters.
