Those are rarely the slow ones though. Lots of software simply has not been written to keep IO queues full. They read a bit of data, process it, read the next bit and so on. On a single thread. This makes all kinds of IO (including network)

Afaik memory-mapped files don't count towards the commit limit. Couldn't they roll a custom file-backed allocator (essentially manual swap) to get around the windows limit?

For fullscreen apps one can do something even better: skip compositing or buffering entirely. Instead cooperate with the GPU and raster directly into the output buffer ahead of the pixels sent to the display. In wayland that's called d

Don't blame the legislators for malicious compliance. Don't set cookies (which is the perfectly reasonable thing to do for read-only visitors of many sites) and no consent is required. And if the user registers for an account then

There isn't One True Utilitarianism anyway because you still have to specify a utility function and the aggregation of it that you want to maximize. And that's an AGI-hard problem. So in practice you can only do vastly simplified

Maybe the incentives could be changed by not employing those people as long as it takes but by a fixed amount of time and instead making the project scope flexible. Once the main project is finished they can work towards some optional goals

All those low-level isolation tools are hard to use. Ok, creating namespaces is easy enough, but it doesn't end there. Maybe you need to setup the filesystem, pivot_root, setup seccomp, ensure no privileged file descriptors keep lying

wasm is bad for efficiency though. if you're running stuff at even moderate scale on a server you should compile to machine code.

On the M1 the framebuffer is a separate device and can be written to directly[0]. Whether that means the GPU-proper can be powered down I don't know. [0] https://asahilinux.org/2021/08/progress-report-august-2

I'd hope that an idle desktop redraws ~nothing and so doesn't waste any CPU cycles. And the GPU not being used might even save power. So as long as it's idle it would ideally consume less power, not more.
