They might as well have addressed that letter to hacker news with a cc to verizon. Well executed PR move.

Tumblr is an interesting case of optimizing for content creator experience and seriously neglecting many blatant issues with content consumer experience

Their page appears to say just a bachelors, not a bs in cs, not even a bs: > Evidence of award of a 4-year bachelor's degree or its equivalent (prior to matriculation) from a recognized institution, demonstrated academic excellence

I largely agree with you. Perhaps it is a difference in semantics. It is very easy to learn to use correctly, but if you aren't taught by someone who uses it correctly (either self taught or otherwise) you're not likely to discove

Spreadsheets ARE software, anyone arguing differently has insufficient experience in at least one of the fields to have an informed opinion. I've worked professionally in both, and the argument in this article is bunk. Spreadsheets ar

Perhaps you haven't been privy to any of the discussions about: "what is the seo implication of SPAs?" Up until now people were pursuing isomorphic JavaScript so they could render server side and client side so the search en

So would the more accurate interpretation be: google is starting to promote that it can and will index javascript single page apps? Thanks for sharing, and nice work btw.

My understanding is that the state before was: Content augmented with JS -- OK to index. Blank page with all content rendered by JS -- not indexed And what they're saying today is: "we are now going to be able to index single page

I saw those for the first time yesterday. Apparently some asshat has a patent on displaying an interstitial when the mouse moves above a certain x coordinate dressed up as "measuring exit intent"

I had the same knee jerk and even a bit further: ruby seems to embrace the "go fast and break things" philosophy much more than python.

I agree that broader software is one way to surf. I also think writing the automation that puts you out of a job is another way. Crud is never going to go away but the disequilibrium will, and many use cases will get reduced to libraries o

So are you saying that "clean up" and suspicious link notices only happen when a site hits a threshold. A state machine of sorts? Frankly, I think "spammy link penalties" is an approach that cannot work long term, any n

That's said like a true "pre freeze" user. If paypal had a mechanism to pre-validate, to avoid having 10's of 1000's of dollars frozen, then they'd be fine. They get hate because their approach to post-hoc frau

"All ads are manipulation" is one way of looking at it. Another way of looking at it is: ads are a mechanism to overcome information shortages. Let's say you invent a shoe that makes back pain go away. How do you get informa
