You are misrepresenting the WHO statement. It’s covering a small technical issue that setting the Ct threshold for PCR tests can vary the false positive rate, particularly when there is low prevalence. Because use of this, it can be helpful

Smith et al again compares N95 to surgical masks. Offeddu et al is the same. Long et al is the same. So none of these links support your claim.

I looked at three links here: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19216002 Is laughably underpowered. 2 people got a cold in one group, 1 in the other. There's nothing to derive from this. bin-Reza is a review tha

Ugh. This is inevitably going to be based on a complete misunderstanding of section 230. Section 230 says that platforms cannot be held liable for the speech they allow on their platforms . Repealing it would only lead to more restrictions

It seems within Apple's style that they will eventually require this to be implemented for certain types of apps.

Edited my comment. I'm pretty sure at UCSC TAs were also responsible for assigning the final grades in a course.

Maybe it's more common than I thought... I've only ever seen TAs teaching discussion sections.

I see a lot of discussion about the consequences of TAs withholding grades. This situation is a consequence of poor management at UCSC. Every other university I'm familiar with makes faculty responsible for submitting grades. It's

Maybe most correct is to say diff and seq alignments are specializations of some superset, given the specializations for both situations. Diff algorithms absolutely do assign a "score" to edits, just in a very simple way. For exam

FYI—sequence alignment algorithms are really just a specialized subset of diffing algorithms that take into account the properties of biological sequences. (For example, certain edits are more or less likely to happen.) https://e

That's not unreasonable to say, but virus sequences drift much faster and have a much shorter lifecycle. This means a 1% difference can be huge for us and insignificant for them.

There are many hard problems and some that can be addressed by algorithms/automation. I think the best advice I can give is reaching out to a lab in your area that does cancer research. Most are happy to talk about what hurdles exist.

This has always been the case, at least in the Bakersfield area, unless a well actively filters these out. Our well water in the 90's would usually be 2-3x the EPA limits.

Is there anything like a spreadsheet to Python converter, with cells becoming made up variable names? I wonder if it’d be useful for quickly noodling together a set of expressions, then “baking” it into code.

I’d second this. Many labs, including ours, are happy to discuss challenges and opportunities with serious outside parties. If you emailed a few labs near you with a detailed explanation I’d expect you would get multiple responses.

Yep, look at Figure 1: https://www.health.nsw.gov.au/endinghiv/Publications/q2-2018... The trend seems to be downward, but it's more like ~10% in the past couple years than a step change.
